Five-time major champion Phil Mickelson recently played Pinehurst No. 2 in preparation for next week’s U.S. Open. Lefty spoke to Pinehurst.com about the Coore & Crenshaw restoration, “I think everybody loves it. Everybody loves what Crenshaw and Coore did here. They’re the best at what they do, and they took a real gem from Donald Ross, and they left the greatness of it, which are the greens, and they restored the shot-making value that was originally intended.”

The men’s and women’s U.S. Open trophies

The stage is set for the USGA’s experiment of hosting both the men’s and women’s U.S. Opens on the same golf course, Pinehurst No. 2, in back-to-back weeks, with, the men, of course, playing their championship first.

On Monday the USGA held its traditional media day to preview the upcoming majors, which will happen during the second and third weeks in June. A couple of intriguing issues were addressed regarding the restoration project, along with the challenges of hosting both Opens.

Tianlang Guan, the 14-year-old amateur from China, received a one-shot penalty for slow play on the 17th hole during the second round of The Masters.

Guan took a bogey on the hole instead of a par. He somehow kept his composure and managed to par the difficult 18th and post a three-over 75, four-over 36-hole total. For now, Guan is inside the cut line (because he’s within ten shots of the leader), but it won’t be pretty if he misses by, say, one.

First of all, my sincere apologies to 14-year-old amateur Tianlang Guan for predicting he wouldn’t break 80 in the first round of The Masters. I am more than happy to be wrong, though. What a performance by the kid, who received an invitation to play at Augusta after winning the Asian Amateur, shooting a one-over 73 in his major debut.

The first- and second-round pairings are out for the Masters! I’ll cut to the chase —  Tiger Woods is grouped with Luke Donald and Scott Piercy at 10:45am on Thursday.

Maybe it’s just me, but the Green Coats seemed to have more fun with the pairings just a few years ago. Wait, no, they don’t have a sense of humor. I’m thinking of the U.S. Open. Duh. (Obviously, I’m typing train of thought.) Anyway, here are the groups that stood out to me (all times EST) — and there are quite a few:
