After the shocking news Wednesday afternoon that Dustin Johnson had fallen down the stairs and landed hard on his lower back, which was causing extreme discomfort, it didn’t sound promising that the world no. 1 and pre-tournament favorite would be able to tee off and complete the first round of the Masters.

However, DJ arrived at Augusta National Thursday afternoon, saying he was “going to give it a try.” He warmed up and hit balls at the range, where it looked like he was swinging tentatively and with limited motion. DJ walked over to the first tee right before his starting time, but then turned around and withdrew from the Masters.

Dustin Johnson had a freak accident at his rental home in Augusta on Wednesday afternoon. He slipped and fell down the stairs and injured his lower back. As of now, it’s unclear if he’ll be able to play, but it sounds like he will try.

I can’t think of much to say, except, “Wow, crazy, holy sh*t.” I’m seriously pretty speechless. I mean, really, DJ??? This is seriously unbelievable news. And this is not a joke. My second thought was how it probably screwed up a lot of people’s pools, picks, bets, etc. because DJ was the betting favorite, of course. One friend said he had DJ in four different match-ups or something. That sucks, but obviously, those things are of little importance — his health and wellbeing is our main concern, of course.

Here’s the statement released by his agent David Winkle:

DeLaet warming up for his Prez Cup debut

Not long ago, Graham DeLaet wasn’t sure if he’d ever be able to play golf again, let alone professionally with the world’s best. Almost two years after having a back surgery that saved his career, DeLaet earned nearly $3 million in prize money in the 2013 season and qualified for the Tour Championship, not to mention earn a spot on the Presidents Cup International team.

“Literally, there was a time I didn’t think I was going to play golf again and not just that, live a normal life,” said DeLaet a few weeks ago in Atlanta. “It was pretty scary. To be here (at the Tour Championship) and to qualify for the Presidents Cup, it’s pretty unbelievable.”

What's the deal, dude?

It’s been 80 days since Dustin Johnson played his last competitive round of golf — that was on Sunday, March 12, at the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral, where he placed a meh T35. That sounds like a long time even though it certainly doesn’t feel like it.

DJ was sidelined for the second time of the season  — he missed a few tournaments in the beginning of the year due to knee surgery last November — when he suffered a back injury while trying to help a friend move a jetski just before the Masters, forcing him to withdraw (though he also missed Bay Hill two weeks previous, which is on his usual schedule). Nearly three months later at the Memorial Tournament, he felt admittedly “out of the routine,” causing him even to forget to unpack “some stuff, mainly belts.
