By Stephanie Wei under The Masters

Well, the travel (birth)day from hell was well worth it once I reached the final destination, albeit at 5am. I’m a tad tired, but I’m looking forward to sharing the experience with you and covering the first major of the year — well, for the men, of course. (It’s my second, thanks to KNC Championship, so take that!)

We have some cool stuff going on this week. Most important, we’re launching SI @ the Masters. Our tent is across the street from the Club on Washington Road. You can’t miss it. Stop by and say hi. We’ll have various special guests and interactive golf-geek activities, so I’m told. More details tomorrow.

Els and Goosen: Dude, who do you gotta %^*# these days for a Masters invite???

Three-time major champion Ernie Els and two-time U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen are two of the notables that have yet to qualify for the Masters.

After the final official week of tournaments around the world, the bulk of the 2012 field has been set, while obviously there are still a number of ways to earn the elusive invite. One of the ways for a ticket to Augusta is to finish in the top 50 in the world rankings at the year end.

Day: Clutch at Augusta!

Less than a year ago, Jason Day backed into his first PGA Tour victory, chunking a shot into the water on the 72nd hole, at the Byron Nelson Championship. (Luckily, moments later, Blake Adams followed him in the drink.) And in February, Day was so unhappy that he felt like he “was going to quit.” Two months later, playing in his first Masters, the 23-year-old Australian threatened the course record at Augusta with a 64 in the third round and then staged a back nine run to nearly win.

We couldn't watch, either

While Rory McIlroy stood on the first tee on Sunday afternoon, roars were already coming from all corners of Augusta. As McIlroy, along with Angel Cabrera and the  hundreds of patrons gathered to watch the final pairing tee off, a thunderous cheer erupted from some 400-plus yards up the hill. The crowd’s gaze whirled from McIlroy toward the first green, uselessly trying to figure out what happened. I looked over to the leaderboard adjacent to the tee box, waiting for the scores to post. Turned out Charl Schwartzel chipped-in for birdie. I also couldn’t help but notice Tiger Woods had birdied two of his first three.

Butch Harmon, Dustin Johnson, Ian Poulter, Graeme McDowell and Jim Nantz sit as panelists at a sponsor function

This post first appeared at the Wall Street Journal’s Daily Fix in the third-round live-blog.

Just because reigning U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell lost his chance at a Masters title by missing the cut didn’t mean he lost his sense of humor.

Fred Couples, a 51-year-old with a bad back, fires a 68 in the second round of the Masters. Go, Boom Boom! Rory McIlroy, the youngest first-round leader in history, continues to play solid golf — he’s two-under through seven holes, nine-under total, and leads by one at the moment over K.J. Choi, who is no stranger to the tournament leaderboard. Once again, I’m live-blogging over at the WSJ.com — please stop by and say hi! Leave comments and questions and I’ll mix them in with the updates.

Oh, and by the way, big thanks to Merf and Conor for all their contributions this week.

Phil and Freddie fist-bump after Freddie knocked it tight on No. 12

I’m blogging for the Wall Street Journal‘s Daily Fix regularly throughout the day beginning tomorrow morning (Thursday), but early on Wednesday, Journal golf writer John Paul Newport and I caught up for a Masters preview discussion where we covered some of our expectations for the week. Here’s a snippet or five:

Just a random shot of the driving range and the caddyshack at Augusta (not the house in the story)

Top caddies Billy Foster (Lee Westwood), JP Fitzgerald (Rory McIlroy) and Ken Comboy (Graeme McDowell) have rented the same house for 12 years from an elderly woman, Joyce Culpepper. She passed away a few months ago, but wrote in her will that the boys still were to be allowed to rent the house the week of The Masters for as many years as they wished.

Mrs. Culpepper’s niece lives in the home now, which has been completely renovated — except for one item: a chalkboard.
