Winning Payne

Augusta National Golf Club chairman Billy Payne held court on Wednesday morning in his annual “State of the Masters” press conference. The event lacked the fireworks, awkward drama and antagonistic atmosphere that was prevalent last year when the media confronted Payne on the club’s hypocrisy — he preached about growing junior golf, while Augusta National passively discriminated against 51% of the population in the U.S.

Well, now, the club has two women members in Condoleezza Rice and Darla Moore.

Well, the travel (birth)day from hell was well worth it once I reached the final destination, albeit at 5am. I’m a tad tired, but I’m looking forward to sharing the experience with you and covering the first major of the year — well, for the men, of course. (It’s my second, thanks to KNC Championship, so take that!)

We have some cool stuff going on this week. Most important, we’re launching SI @ the Masters. Our tent is across the street from the Club on Washington Road. You can’t miss it. Stop by and say hi. We’ll have various special guests and interactive golf-geek activities, so I’m told. More details tomorrow.

Italian trio of Edoardo & Francesco Molinari and Matteo Manassero attempt to skip balls across the water last year

It’s become a Masters lure for players to try and skip balls across the pond on the par-3 16th and onto the green during the Monday and Tuesday practice rounds at Augusta National. “It’s turned into a tradition, you can’t get away with not skipping it,” said Justin Rose at Bay Hill. “The crowd boos you if you don’t.”

During the last few weeks of the Florida swing, I asked around ten players to reveal how close they’ve knocked it to the pin — if they even made it across the water, of course. It’s harder than you may think!

Martin Kaymer doesn’t feel added pressure heading into The Masters, the first major of the year. At least that was his sentiment almost three weeks ago when he stopped to chat in between hitting range balls at Innisbrook in Palm Harbor, Florida, on the eve of the Transitions Championship. The straight-talking German called it “just another tournament” (in fact, several times during our five-minute interview).

Holy crap, Masters Monday has arrived! Can you feel the excitement?? This is one of my favorite weeks of the year (aside from when the Open Championship is held at St. Andrews). It also marks the start of the “real” golf season (meaning that people other than hardcore golf fans actually care), and it’s The Masters! Excuse me if I sound a little delirious this morning, but I didn’t sleep very well (if at all). I spent the night tossing and turning because A) I was too fired up about leaving for Augusta today; and B) I was too nervous all five alarms I set wouldn’t go off and I’d miss my flight.
