Match 1: Justin Rose (Ryder Cup record: 9-3-2) Henrik Stenson (Ryder Cup record: 5-4-2) vs. Patrick Reed (Ryder Cup record: 3-0-1) Jordan Spieth (Ryder Cup record: 2-1-1)

No wasting time. The marquee match of the morning has Europe sending out this year’s British Open champ and Olympic champ. Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson went 3-0 as a team at the 2014 Ryder Cup. Team USA kicks off its latest redemption mission by reuniting Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed, who were the only Americans who did anything two years ago at Gleneagles. Then, they were both rookies with very little expected of them. Now, they are expected to be America’s best. This is all good so long as they win. Now, it’s not exactly Phil and Tiger from 2004 (wait, wasn’t that Hal Sutton’s fault?) but a Spieth-Reed loss could start to deflate an American team that spent two years trying to pump itself up.

In between mouthfuls of hot dog and sips of pissy beer American golf fan David Johnson decided to heckle members of Team Europe for missing putts on the eighth hole during their practice round. Somehow this led to an endearing moment in what has been a rather strange buildup to a golf tournament — even by Ryder Cup standards.

After watching Andy Sullivan and Rory McIlroy repeatedly miss a putt, a fan decided to let the European players and surrounding gallery know that, given the chance, he would obviously make the putt. In what would be every hecklers worst nightmare, he was called out by Team Europe and then pulled out of the gallery by Henrik Stenson. When Justin Rose slapped $100 down on the green, it was on.

2015

It’s been somewhat of a tumultuous year for Rory McIlroy, who kicked off 2015 hoping to carry over his form from 2014, when he captured two majors, but it was interrupted mid-season with a freak ankle injury in a friendly “kickabout.” The world no. 3 started the year with a win at the European Tour’s Dubai Desert Classic in January and he ended 2015 with yet another victory in the desert at the DP World Championship to cap off what was somewhat of a lost year.

For the second time in McIlroy’s career, he completed a Dubai double, meaning he won the tournament, along with the season-long Race to Dubai crown for the third time in four years.

Timing is always everything, isn’t it? I was walking back to the media center from a nearly empty range when I saw Ernie Els, one of two players still practicing on the eve of the European Tour’s flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship. I almost kept going, but I figured golf fans would love to see The Big Easy hitting balls. In other words, it was a perfect moment to use Periscope — and it turned out to be even better than I thought.

Ernie, who was in charge of the redesign at Wentworth, the event’s venue, saw me watching him and pointing my phone at him, so he said hello and asked what I was doing (mostly, I think he was surprised to see me on this side of the pond because there isn’t much American media here). I started to explain Periscope to him and his interest piqued. I mean, he got really into it — he answered questions, demonstrated a swing tip, showed off his clubs and more.

You can watch the video above, but you should really download Periscope if you can and watch it on the app for the full effect because you can see all the comments and how Ernie was interacting with fans.
