She’s the one!

Stacy Lewis knows a thing or two about beating the odds and achieving the improbable. Nearly a decade ago, the 28-year-old who played her college golf at University of Arkansas had spine surgery to correct a severe curvature from scoliosis. And now, after battling from a four-shot deficit to start the final round, Lewis captured not only the trophy at the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup, but also ascended to the top of the world rankings.

There’s more on the line than the prize awarded to the winner of this week’s season-ending LPGA Tour Championship. Five players — Yani Tseng, Ai Miyazato, Na Yeon Choi, Cristie Kerr and Jiyai Shin — are in a tight battle to capture player of the year honors.

Last week at the LPGA Championship, the tour’s second major of the seasson, Cristie Kerr blitzed the field by an astounding 12 strokes in a performance that rivaled Tiger Woods’ in the 2000 US Open at Pebble Beach. With the big win, Kerr ousted Ai Miyazato from atop the Rolex Rankings to become the first US-born player to reach the number-one spot.

Now that Kerr, a blonde, blue-eyed American, is the best player in the ever-changing world rankings, does that mean more Americans will start paying attention to the LPGA? And will companies come running to sponsor new tournaments?
