Fifty-effing-nine!

Fifty-effing-nine!

Jim Furyk shot a sizzling 12-under 59 to become only the sixth player to post golf’s magic number during the second round of the BMW Championship.

Furyk, who started on no. 10, posted six birdies and an eagle on the back nine (his first) for an eight-under 28 at Conway Farms — which matched Phil Mickelson’s effort two weeks ago in the first round of the Deutsche Bank Championship (but Phil had to settle with a 63).

The question was whether Furyk could carry over the momentum on the next nine holes and control his nerves to achieve such a remarkable feat.

Knox

59? No big deal!

Just two weeks after Will Wilcox posted a 59 at Web.com Tour’s Utah Championship, Russell Knox matched the feat at Hillcrest Country Club in the second round of the Albertsons Boise Open.

The 28-year-old Scotland native, who started on no. 10, kicked off his round with a birdie, then jumped on that awful par train for four holes, before playing the last four holes four-under. After making the turn, he made an eagle on no. 2, followed by five consecutive birdies. From holes 15-7, he was 11-under. Here’s a screenshot of his scorecard:

I know I should know better and use Word instead of WordPress to write my posts, but old habits die hard. The internet timed out and I just lost the last hour’s worth of work–which is always fun–but it’s my own fault. Anyway! It was a busy yet fun (and kind of weird) day on Wednesday at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Above, you can watch the #WUPHangout that I did earlier this evening. What did we talk about?

Joe Posnanski recently wrote about Alex Rodriguez’s impending arrival to baseball’s 600 Home Run Club. I love one particular line, summing up how there is zero buzz about reaching the once insanely difficult milestone that Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Ken Griffey Jr. and Sammy Sosa have all passed. (I already forgot about Griffey and Sosa.)

It is like someone struggling to climb to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, reaching the peak and finding that people had already built a McDonald’s, a Home Depot and a Best Buy up there.

I feel the same way about what used to be golf’s magic number: 59. I’m not suggesting Paul Goydos and Stuart Appleby are juicing, but 59 doesn’t have the same reverence anymore.

Sheesh, I step away from the computer for a few hours and something actually happens in the Quad Cities. Thank God I have so many vigilant friends that texted and/or emailed me with the breaking news. (LeBron who?) By now, you’ve all probably heard that Paul Goydos posted a mind-blowing 12-under 59 in the first round of the John Deere. But one thing most reports neglected to mention is that the “lift, clean and place” rule was in effect.
