If there were ever a question over Jason Day’s position as the world no. 1 player, he certainly answered with his wire-to-wire victory at The Players Championship, which boasts the strongest field of the year, not to mention the richest, with $1.9 million to the winner. Day’s commanding performance gave him a four-shot edge over the next closest competitor Kevin Chappell, who was also the runner-up when the 28-year-old Australian hoisted the trophy at Bay Hill in March.

Day, who has seven wins in his last 17 starts, has separated himself from the rest of the “Big Four” — Jordan Spieth (MC), Rory McIlroy (T12) and defending champ Rickie Fowler (MC) — as the most dominant player in the game.

Unlike the first two rounds at The Players, where several threatened to break the course record and a couple guys matched it, TPC Sawgrass showed its teeth on Saturday afternoon when the greens went from being soft and receptive to lightning-fast. I mean, I’d never seen tour players miss so many two-footers. We saw Sergio Garcia six-putt (if you count his first from the fringe) and even 54-hole leader Jason Day four-putted. A number of players also putted *off* the greens. There were a total of 149 three-putts, the most in the history of this event.

Finally. The drought is over. It only took 6,300 tee shots, but the famed par-3 17th at TPC Sawgrass yielded its first hole-in-one in 14 years at The Players Championship on Friday.

Will Wilcox made a rare ace with a pitching wedge from 147 yards in the second round. And he did it with a yellow ball.

It’s hard to rag on an eight-under 64 at TPC Sawgrass (or really anywhere for that matter), but if you bogey your last hole of the day, which happens to be a par-5, and your name is Rory McIlroy, then it’s quite understandable. As the world no. 3 approached the podium to speak to the press, he certainly didn’t exhibit the body language of a player who had just shot his career-best at The Players.

Another morning with soft greens and hardly a breath of wind at TPC Sawgrass yielded low scores for the second day in a row at The Players Championship. Colt Knost took advantage of the ideal conditions, and when he stepped up to the 18th tee, he was 10-under.

Knowing that a place in history (breaking the course record) was at stake, he faced the intimidating tee shot on the final hole. As he stood over the ball, he let a negative thought cross his mind. A day earlier, he had snap-hooked his drive into the water hazard guarding the left side of the hole.

Rory McIlroy made waves on social media Thursday afternoon in the first round of The Players. And no, it wasn’t for his play. Instead, the buzz was all about his attire, as he sported “joggers” — athletic pants with elastic bottoms, a “trend” (if you can call it that) Rickie Fowler debuted at the first tournament of the year in Maui.

McIlroy accompanied this new look with the new Nike Air Max 90s (which will be available on nike.com on June 1). What appears to have been somewhat overshadowed is the collarless shirt he’s wearing, as well. I actually didn’t initially notice it until someone on Twitter pointed it out, but the shirt has been featured prominently this season as Nike’s redefinition of the golf polo.

On a rare day at TPC Sawgrass where the greens were soft, the wind was barely existent and the heat was causing the golf ball to soar longer than normal, the players with morning tee times at The Players Championship took advantage of the ideal scoring conditions.

Especially world no. 1 Jason Day, who shot a scorching nine-under 63 to tie the course record previously set by Fred Couples (1992), Greg Norman (1994), Roberto Castro (2013) and Martin Kaymer (2014). With the other half of the field still on the golf course, Day currently has a two-shot lead over a handful of players.
