At the end of regulation on Sunday afternoon at The Memorial, there were two players left standing at 15-under, Will McGirt and Jon Curran, who are relative unknowns to the average fan and both searching for their first victory on the PGA Tour. Right behind them were two big-hitting stars, Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy, but they were unable to catch the two players who had taken very different paths than they took en route to the big leagues.

Maybe a DJ-Rory playoff would have been more appealing to the masses, but seriously, who doesn’t love a pair of Cinderella stories facing off in extra holes at Muirfield Village, the course that tournament host Jack Nicklaus built? (I’m a sucker for the underdog, though.)

No surprise to hear this news. In fact, while I was following Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy play the front nine this afternoon, I randomly said to two other media members, “70% chance JDay pulls out of the Olympics because of the Zika virus and I don’t blame him at all.”

Following his second round at The Memorial Tournament, Day, the world no. 1, expressed his concerns about competing in the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro due to fear of getting the Zika virus. It was the first time that Day had publicly discussed his apprehensiveness.

World no. 1 and local resident Jason Day is well aware of his poor record at The Memorial Tournament, held at his home course Muirfield Village Golf Club. Before he even teed off, first-round leader Dustin Johnson had already posted an eight-under 64, so Day knew he had a tough act to follow.
