For the win!

The road back to the winner’s circle

Almost three years ago, J.B. Holmes was diagnosed with Chiara malformations in his brain and discovered he needed surgery to remove the pressure that was causing vertigo-like symptoms. He had his first — yes, that’s right — brain surgery in September 2011.

He keeps the piece of his skull that was removed in his closet. Now, he might put it in the trophy he won on Sunday at Quail Hollow Club.

Phrill!

Phrill!

Phil Mickelson got off to a fast start on the front nine during the third round of the Wells Fargo Championship and didn’t really let up on his way to a career-best nine-under, 63, at Quail Hollow Club. Mickelson, whose putter went cold on Friday, found his game on moving day to surge up the leaderboard, with a 54-hole total of 11-under.

Rory redux of 2010?

Rory redux of 2010?

After just making the cut on the number, Rory McIlroy put on a clinic at Quail Hollow Club on Saturday morning during the third round of the Wells Fargo Championship. His ballstriking, iron play, wedges and putting were all downright impressive, propelling him to fire a seven-under 65, six-under total and vaulting him back into contention hours before the leaders teed off.

Lefty slows down after quick start at Wells Fargo

Phil Mickelson got off to a fantastic start at the Wells Fargo Championship, opening with a five-under 67 on Thursday. He credited his fine play to his putter. Well, it was the opposite story for Friday’s second round at Quail Hollow Club.

De Jonge goes low Friday

De Jonge goes low Friday

After posting an eight-over 80 on Thursday at Quail Hollow Club, Brendon de Jonge figured he’d be going home early — which, at least, wouldn’t be far since he resides in Charlotte, where the Wells Fargo Championship is held. Then, de Jonge caught fire on Friday, shooting a 10-under 62 to tie the course record that Rory McIlroy set in the final round in 2010 when he went on to win.

Caption this!

Rory McIlroy struggled with the flat stick on the slick greens at Augusta National Golf Club during the Masters a few weeks ago, where he finished third-to-last in putting — which he was quick to point out himself in his pre-tournament presser at Quail Hollow Club on Wednesday.

On the eve of the Wells Fargo Championship, the site of McIlroy’s first PGA Tour victory in 2010, Rory was adamant about improving his performance on the greens and looking forward to return to competition at a venue where he’s experienced quite a bit of success.

Phil & Tom talking shop

Phil & Tom talking shop

Phil Mickelson had just chunked two chips from just short of the green on no. 12 during Wednesday’s pro-am at the Wells Fargo Championship. His missed shots didn’t stop him from pulling Tom Fazio, the esteemed architect who was responsible for overseeing the changes to Quail Hollow Club, out of the gallery and inside the ropes to rave about the new and improved golf course.

No. 16 from the fairway bunker on the right side

In preparation for the 2017 Wells Fargo Championship, the Quail Hollow Club has undergone a decent-sized facelift — with the bent greens replaced with bermuda grass. Then, there’s the last three holes, dubbed the “Green Mile,” which has been revamped somewhat extensively to intensify the chances for an even more thrilling finish.
