Walker celebrates with Hawaii pageant princesses
Jimmy Walker went 0-for-187 in his first seven years on the PGA Tour, but on Sunday at Waialae Country Club, he snagged his second win in six starts in the new 2013-14 wraparound season (making him 2-for-193). Amidst a packed leaderboard at the Sony Open, Walker finally started to separate himself from the field coming down the stretch, carding birdies in four of the last six holes to post a final-round seven-under 63, 17-under total.

Despite struggling with his driver off the tee, Chris Kirk shot a five-under 65 to take a one-shot lead over fellow University of Georgia alumnus Harris English and PGA Tour rookie Will Wilcox heading into the final round of the Sony Open.

Kirk made the most out of his round on Saturday at Waialae Country Club, which included a nine-footer for birdie on no. 18 to narrowly separate him from the clustered leaderboard. There are 26 players within five shots of the lead.

Adam Scott and his pro surfer caddie

The feature attraction of the second round of the Sony Open wasn’t necessarily leader Brian Stuard or even Marc Leishman or Hideo Tanihara — rather, world-class surfer Kelly Slater, who was in the gallery to watch his pals Adam Scott and Benji Weatherly, a fellow pro surfer who is moonlighting as Scott’s caddie this week

James Hahn achieved one of the rarest feats in golf on Friday during the second round of the Sony Open.

From the right rough on the par-5 9th at Waialae Country Club, Hahn hit a *perfect* second shot from 193 yards with a 6-iron, landing it just short of the green and letting it roll up to the pin and straight into the hole for an albatross (or double eagle — semantics).

W for Waialae

W for Waialae

Conditions were ideal on Thursday at Waialae Country Club to kick off the opening round of the Sony Open, the PGA Tour’s first full-field event of the year (not season anymore). The sun was out in full force and the wind was mostly calm. Most of the lower scores came from the morning wave, per usual — don’t worry, they switch on Friday, so the other half of the field will be able to get after it.

Cramming for the first exam of the year

Every year the Sony Open is like the first day of school, but this time around it’s a bit different with the new wraparound season in place, so instead, it’s like returning from a long winter break. Walk out to the putting green and you’ll find yourself surrounded by a chorus of “Happy New Years!”

For those who didn’t cover and/or play in the first six tournaments of the 2013-14 season — like yours truly — then it still feels like the Hyundai Tournament of Champions kicked things off, but alas, we’re already *seven* events deep and this is the eighth. Cray, cray!
