The Stense!

The Stense!

Henrik Stenson has earned an invitation to what will be his eighth consecutive Masters, which starts April 11th. Stenson, who dropped in the world rankings to as low as no. 133 eight months ago, finished strong, birdieing four of his last five holes, including the final two to shoot a six-under 66 and ensure a move from no. 53 in the rankings to inside the top 50.

The top 50 in the world rankings as of this week receive spots in the Masters, the season’s first major.

Rory

Rory feels like his game is coming around

Rory Mcilroy reeled off two birdies at Redstone Golf Club to close out the final round of the Shell Houston Open. The world no. 2 shot a two-under 70 and four-under total, which will put him at a mediocre middle-of-the-pack finish.

Good news is he’s getting closer to feeling ready for the Masters — and he’s making putts — but he still needs to work on his course management.

Wheatie just happy to be here

Wheatie just happy to be here

After shooting a pair of 67s at the Shell Houston Open, Steve Wheatcroft is leading a PGA Tour event for the first time in his career. And he got into the tournament — which boasts some big names, like Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy — the hard way: He earned one of the hard-pressed four spots in the Monday qualifier (go low or go home), but it wasn’t without a bit of grief.

Vamos!

Rory headed to the Alamo!

Just before the 5pm EST deadline, Rory McIlroy committed to play in next week’s Valero Texas Open at TPC San Antonio — which is a huge victory for the tournament.

It must have been a very last-minute decision because after Rory shot a two-under 70 for a two-day total of one-under, he told reporters that he wasn’t planning to enter.

In case you missed it, you can watch a wrap-up of tidbits from the first round of the Shell Houston Open. I also answered some reader questions.

Here’s one for you guys: How often should I be doing these wrap-up/Hangouts? Every day? Every other day? Thoughts?

Oh, by the way, thanks to Johnny for suggesting the name “Wei-ing in” — I think that’s a winner!

The latest putting guru on Tour: Steve Stricker

The latest putting guru on Tour: Steve Stricker

Semi-retired Steve Stricker, who has earned $1.8 million in three events this year, has a future as a putting/short-game coach if he wants to keep busy. Stricker gave Tiger a putting tip on Wednesday at Doral, and now the 14-time major champ has been unstoppable, notching PGA Tour wins no. 76 and 77 in the last three weeks.

McIlroy looking to get his groove back in Houston

Rory McIlroy doesn’t per se mind that Tiger Woods has displaced him as the world no. 1. After all, it takes some attention away from McIlroy, who is more concerned with his swing path than his ranking.

The 23-year-old from Northern Ireland enters the Shell Houston Open this week as the world’s no. 2, trying to build from the momentum he found a few weeks ago at Doral just 14 days before the Masters kicks off.
