Mending fences on the range

Mending fences on the range

Sergio Garcia was spotted approaching Tiger Woods on the driving range on Monday at Merion Golf Club and attempting to reconcile. It was their first meeting since Sergio made the “fried chicken” comment at a European Tour awards dinner. He has apologized in a statement and press conference, but the two hadn’t seen each other in public.

While Sergio tries to make amends, it’s unclear if Tiger is ready, according to Bob Harig:

Welcome to this week’s By The Numbers smorgasbord, which includes The Players, HP Byron Nelson Championship and the Colonial Invitational! This should be educational. So, buckle up, stats geeks.

Tiger Woods, y'all

Tiger Woods, y’all

Each season on the PGA Tour often has a recurring theme. A couple of years ago, there were a deluge of playoffs, last year we saw some tremendous final-round comebacks, and it seems like this year’s winners have previously barely made a cut all year.

At the Byron Nelson Championship, we saw another example of that with Sang-Moon Bae. Just like there have been a variety of winners so far this season, there are many different ways to win golf tournaments. Most commonly, the champions have been able to excel in many contrasting parts of their game well over the course of the tournament, as we have seen multiple times over the course of the season — which is what Sang-Moon Bae did at the HP Byron Nelson Championship.

Apparently I’m an idiot and need to learn how to copy and paste properly. Thanks to the astute reader who pointed out that I tweeted the incorrect link.

Well, most of you properly missed the Hangout, but good news is you can watch it now. Bad news is I ramble. God, these things are awkward when you’re multitasking!

Thanks everyone for all the questions on the Tiger vs. Sergio saga, which went from being amusing to just bad after Sergio made a racist remark. I’m pretty much done with it, but I have a feeling this is not going to be the last we hear of the incident.

Not afraid of Tiger

Not afraid of Tiger

Well, there’s one thing Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia agree on, and that’s the anchoring ban, which the USGA and R&A announced would go into effect on January 1, 2016, but that’s pretty much where their similarities end. As we know, Tiger and Sergio really don’t like each other (or “enjoy each other’s company”).

It’s Sergio’s turn to vent in this never-ending feud, which doesn’t simply date back to The Incident at The Players, and no, he just won’t hold back (which, regardless of your opinion of Sergio, you have to respect or at least appreciate his honesty). From Golf.com’s Paul Mahoney:

Tiger doing his best Phil impression

Tiger doing his best Phil impression

Considering he’s not playing in a tournament this week, Tiger Woods sure has made a ton of headlines already. Between hanging out with his kids and girlfriend Lindsey Vonn and hosting charity events, Woods even squeezed in a press conference for his tournament, the AT&T National, on Monday morning at Congressional.

Let’s start with the stuff you care about most — Tiger vs. Sergio saga. In the latest episode of The Real Housewives of the PGA Tour, Tiger was asked if he had reached out to Sergio to mend things instead of relaying comments through the press. The answer was straightforward and simple: “No.”

Tiger and Sergio: Not even frenemies, just enemies

Tiger and Sergio: Not even frenemies, just enemies

Honestly, I’m over this whole controversy. Which one? Oh, The Incident on the second hole in the third round of The Players Championship, where Sergio accused Tiger of purposely causing a disturbance. I mean, really! Well, I guess there’s a part of me that finds it comically intriguing. So, what’s the latest twist is this never-ending episode of the Real Housewives of the PGA Tour?

Contrary to the Sports Illustrated report on Monday that quoted two marshals saying they never spoke with Tiger or told him Sergio had already hit. Turns out a volunteer did talk to Tiger, but only after he had already pulled the 5-wood, which caused the crowd to react noisily and distract Sergio, according to The Jacksonville Times-Union‘s Garry Smits

Tiger's shot on the second hole in the third round

Tiger’s shot on the second hole in the third round

Just when you thought this season of the Real Housewives of the PGA Tour, starring Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia, was over, there’s another twist. Nice work by SI’s Michael Bamberger, who tracked down the marshals working the second hole at TPC Sawgrass during the Players Championship, including Saturday when The Incident occurred. You know, the ones that supposedly told Tiger that Sergio had already hit, which led him to pull a club, resulting in the crowd to react and then distracting Sergio.

At the risk of getting killed on the Internet and called a “Tiger hater,” I’m posting this because IT’S MY JOB, SO LEAVE ME THE EFF ALONE!

Besides, I’m a little late to the game because I didn’t think Tiger Woods’ drop on 14 was going to turn into Drop-gate, part deux. I know, silly me! I should know better. After all, Tiger farting is a big deal!

The way I see it is his playing partner told him the ball crossed farther up, so he was good, BUT at the same time, it’s up to the player to make the right call, as well. Basically, for rules nazis, Casey Wittenberg’s and Tiger’s words aren’t good enough for you. (Yes, I realize Tiger couldn’t know where it crossed because he looked away in disgust after he made contact.)
