Welcome to this week’s By The Numbers smorgasbord, which includes The Players, HP Byron Nelson Championship and the Colonial Invitational! This should be educational. So, buckle up, stats geeks.

Tiger Woods, y'all

Tiger Woods, y’all

Each season on the PGA Tour often has a recurring theme. A couple of years ago, there were a deluge of playoffs, last year we saw some tremendous final-round comebacks, and it seems like this year’s winners have previously barely made a cut all year.

At the Byron Nelson Championship, we saw another example of that with Sang-Moon Bae. Just like there have been a variety of winners so far this season, there are many different ways to win golf tournaments. Most commonly, the champions have been able to excel in many contrasting parts of their game well over the course of the tournament, as we have seen multiple times over the course of the season — which is what Sang-Moon Bae did at the HP Byron Nelson Championship.

Boo's back!

Booooooooooooooo! No, they’re not booing! They’re Boo’ing.

Golf is better when Tiger Woods is winning tournaments and the only thing that makes it more fun is when Boo Weekley wins, too. He’s a redneck and talks like one (“ain’t” is a regular in his vocabulary), loves beer (the cheap, American kind) and singing (if you’re walking down the fairway with him, he’ll likely be crooning and making up his own lyrics to a familiar tune), and I’m pretty sure he golfs to support his fishing habit.

What you see is what you get, though he is smarter than he may lead you to believe, and everybody loves Boo, who broke his five-year victory drought at the Colonial Invitational.

D'oh!

D’oh!

Jeff Overton was disqualified in the third round at Colonial Invitational for using a putting aid on the practice green in between nines. With threesomes teeing off nos. 1 and 10 after the weather-suspended second round was finished Saturday morning, there was a backup on the 10th tee.

A PGA Tour rules official told Overton he could practice putting and chipping while he waited, but the official didn’t remind Overton that he couldn’t use a training aid. Overton, who was even par on the front nine, was informed of the DQ on the 11th hole.
