Thanks to the fine folks of Aberdeen Asset Management and Visit Scotland, WUP is in Scotland this week covering the Scottish Open and playing some of the great courses in the area. Keep up with my Instagram, YouTube and Twitter for (more real-time) behind-the-scenes coverage of the event and my adventures.

Phil Mickelson Scottish Open

Phil Mickelson, who is finally no longer winless in the United Kingdom, never fails to thrill. It’s almost maddening watching him because you really just don’t know what he might pull out of his bag of tricks.

This time, Phil survived a shaky finish on the 18th in regulation that forced a sudden-death playoff against Branden Grace to capture the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open.

Henrik Stenson will take a two-shot lead into the final round of the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open, with American Phil Mickelson heading the chasing pack in a stellar final grouping.

Stenson posted a superb round of 66 at Castle Stuart Golf Links to move to 16 under par, with Mickelson in hot pursuit after matching the Swede’s effort.

On Saturday at Castle Stuart, it was announced that Aberdeen Asset Management had signed on to extend its title sponsorship of the Scottish Open through 2017.

While the championship is scheduled to head to Royal Aberdeen for 2014, the plan is to return to Castle Stuart, which has played host the past three years, in one of the following three years. The prize money will also increase from £3 million to £3.25 million in both 2015 and 2016, and then to £3.5 million in 2017.

The 18th at Castle Stuart

I sound like a broken record constantly apologizing for the delay in posting recaps and reviews, but the days are packed and so are the nights (and no, I’m not just going out on the town and getting smashed), so refer my social media channels. It’s a bit of a different week for me, which is a fantastic change of pace, not to mention scenery. I decided to sacrifice my beauty sleep and catch up, so here we go!

Phil warming up for the upcoming Open Championship

Phil Mickelson took advantage of the ideal conditions at Castle Stuart on Thursday morning — 70-plus degrees, no wind, and not a cloud in sight — and fired an opening six-under 66 at the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open.

Mickelson’s game appears to be shaping up quite nicely for next week’s Open Championship, and while others, including U.S. Open champion Justin Rose, are playing practice rounds at Muirfield to prepare, Phil prefers to play competitively the week before a major.
