The Duff is sneaky funny

On Tuesday afternoon at the driving range at TPC Sawgrass, Dufner and Ryuji Imada had a casual long-drive contest, which was being tracked with the Track Man golf radar that measures every possible stat you could want, like spin rate, ball speed, club head speed, smash factor, just to name a few. Dufner was absolutely crushing it. He joked he had a case of “beast-itis,” and mockingly flexed like a body-builder. He striped one that recorded a ball speed of 170mph. So if Dufner accidentally hits you with an errant drive, that’s how fast the ball is traveling! Ouch.

Waaaaah

Beloved 2012 Masters champion Bubba Watson has decided to skip next week’s Players Championship, the PGA Tour’s marquee event, saying he wants to spend more time with his family after his whirlwind post-victory, week-long media tour (that he did mostly by choice). Two weeks before the Masters, Bubba and his wife Angie adopted their two-month-old son Caleb.

I walked away from my first trip to New Orleans and covering the Zurich Classic, thinking, uh, why wasn’t I here last year? It’s got it all — awesome city, great tournament with field, friendly people, scrumptious food, eclectic sweet-sounding tunes (especially at Jazz Fest — for the record, seeing Tom Petty live was a massive highlight, along with walking home from the Fair Grounds through Treme, aka a neighborhood some wouldn’t recommend trekking through, back to the French Quarter), and vibrant culture and atmosphere.

Sweet, sweet victory

Jason Dufner beat Ernie Els on the second playoff hole with a birdie on No. 18 to finally capture that elusive first win at the Zurich Classic. Dufner was previously 0-for-163 on the PGA Tour and perhaps best known for his “waggles” in his pre-shot routine, along with squandering a five-shot lead with four to play at the 2011 PGA Championship and eventually losing to Keegan Bradley in a three-hole playoff.

When I saw his name climb up the leaderboard on Friday at TPC Louisiana, I was probably thinking the same thing as you: Oh man, Dufner with another 36-hole lead — can he see this one through?! This was the 6th of his career and third of the season (held at least a share of the 36-hole lead at the Transitions Championship and the Masters, where he eventually placed T10 and T24, respectively).
