Frenemy handshake

First of all, apologies for the delay in posting yesterday’s results — I had a deadline for an SI story and then hopped on a flight to Palm Beach for the Florida Swing. Woot! More posts are on the way, but gotta hit up the range here at the Honda Classic, my favorite regular full-field tour stop.

Rory McIlroy may have lost in the finals to Hunter Mahan and delayed his ascendancy to No. 1 in the rankings, but he still felt atop of the world after winning his grudge match against Lee Westwood earlier on Sunday. The 22-year-old admitted that the semifinals felt like the finals for him. (No, he wasn’t trying to make excuses and it wasn’t sour grapes.)

Rory will battle frenemie (or maybe it's just enemy now?) Westwood

The match-up that we were all hoping for is no longer just a possibility — it is indeed happening. Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood both won their quarterfinal matches, beating Sang-Moon Bae and Martin Laird, respectively.

Why are we calling this a “grudge” match? I mean, aren’t Rory and Westy like besties?

*Gasp*

Tiger Woods couldn’t make a putt to save his life on Thursday — but what else is new these days? — and missed a five-footer on the 18th hole at Dove Mountain to lose to Nick Watney in the second round of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship. Given Tiger’s putting woes lately, it shouldn’t have been a surprise, but I was admittedly shocked (initial reaction went something like *gasp,* followed by “wow”). So was Watney.

First I was afraid, I was petrified...

Match Play Wednesday is one of my favorite days of the golfing season. The only downside is there’s so much happening it’s hard to keep track of it all! Kudos to Conor for breaking down all thirty-freaking-two of the matches (sorry, dude!) — his picks fared alright, but as we all know, sometimes you have better luck using a coin to fill out your bracket.

Raise your hand if you had Luke Donald in your Round of 4? Yeah, well, if you picked Ernie Els to pull out a can of whoop ass, then you deserve major props. I think it’s safe to assume a lot of brackets busted when Els trumped Luke 5&4. Luckily, we’re still in the game because of the points system that Golfweek uses. Phew.

Keegs sent Twitter and TV viewers spitting mad on Sunday

Cripes, I can’t believe I’m actually taking the time out of my supposed week off and addressing this issue, but obviously a lot of people took issue with Keegan Bradley’s frequent spitting on Sunday at Riviera (though if we’re going to gripe about a habit, I’d go with his deliberate pre-shot routine). I mean, really, guys, spitting?

I guess I’ve almost grown immune to it because I’m out there every week and I see just about every player gob saliva from his mouth on the reg. Look, every time before I sit down or kneel on the grass out there, I wonder, is this somewhere someone has hawked a loogey? Oh well.

Tiger taming? Naw, but we'll see...

I know this is kind of late notice, but we’ve started a WUP group over at Golfweek’s Match Play Challenge. How do you join? Go HERE, fill out the bracket, and when it asks for your contact information, write in “Weiunderpar” in the group field.

Golfweek is offering tons of cool prizes, but can they beat WUP’s award? …
