Bubba at an Orlando Magic game during his time off

After winning the Masters and fulfilling his obligation to play and defend his title at the Zurich Classic, Bubba Watson took a month off from golf to spend time with his family — he and his wife Angie adopted a baby boy in March — and adjust to his new life and fame. With the U.S. Open just around the corner, Bubba is playing the Memorial Tournament.

Waaaaah

Beloved 2012 Masters champion Bubba Watson has decided to skip next week’s Players Championship, the PGA Tour’s marquee event, saying he wants to spend more time with his family after his whirlwind post-victory, week-long media tour (that he did mostly by choice). Two weeks before the Masters, Bubba and his wife Angie adopted their two-month-old son Caleb.

Watson made his disappointing announcement via his Twitter account in a series of tweets:

Putter throw!

Tiger Woods’ current and former swing coaches, Sean Foley and Butch Harmon, respectively, both weighed in with opinions on the 14-time major champ earlier this week. Foley thinks the fish-bowl critiquing of Tiger has gotten out of control. (Hasn’t he always been under more scrutiny than everyone else? It’s part of the gig.) Speaking on the XM Sirius show “Fairways of Life” hosted by Matt Adams, Foley says, back off, my man!

You’ve all seen the replay of Bubba Watson’s snap-hook shot from the trees on No. 10, the second playoff hole, to beat Louis Oosthuizen and win the 2012 Masters. Well, one more time:

It was difficult, however, to grasp exactly how ridiculous it was from the TV angle. Thanks to readers Nick and Jim for passing along this aerial map diagramming The Shot…

Hold up, hold up

I’m catching up on the good ol’ blog since I took a much-needed respite the last few days. (Yes, I’m in Hilton Head for The Heritage, but I made my grand entrance into the media center only today — hey, it was at 7am, though!) I’ve obviously watched Bubba Watson on Letterman, along with several other moments of his dazzling post-Masters victory media tour in NYC. There were a few other gems that came out of the woodwork, while I was sleeping resting.

Let’s take a gander:

Tiger posted his worst finish as a pro at the Masters last week (T40)

One promise Tiger Woods has kept since his fall from grace: He no longer waits until just before 5pm ET deadline the Friday prior to commit to tournaments. (I know, hand the guy a gold star!)

Earlier this week, the Wells Fargo Championship’s Twitter (sort of) scooped TigerWoods.com on the announcement. Well done. Tiger’s website added a few more details, along with his commitment to return to The Players Championship and reflections on Bay Hill and the Masters:

By now, you’ve probably seen some version of The Awkward Handshake That Shook The World With Laughter, but it really doesn’t get old (and probably never will). I watched it on loop in the press center with awe and marvel, not to mention trying not to fall out of my chair giggling — that would have been totally embarrassing!

Well, the above clip shows Billy Payne going in to shake 2012 Masters champ Bubba Watson’s hand and then getting nothing but air. You see, Bubba started to extend his hand toward the Chairman until he saw the shiny green jacket that Charl Schwartzel was holding, so naturally, Bubba turned to Charl.

Louis' consolation prize: an albatross, only the fourth in Masters history

I spent Sunday afternoon in the sitting room in between the locker room and the Grill Room at Augusta National and watched most of the final round with Louis Oosthuizen’s family and management. Defending champion Charl Schwartzel and his Green Jacket even showed up around the 12th hole. So did Bubba Watson’s agent Jens Beck.

Interesting enough, WUP’s special contributor Brendan Prunty and I unknowingly switched places. At the end of regulation, I headed back to the press center, while Brendan wandered into the same room and observed the final 90 minutes with Team Louis.

Ginni Rometty: Will she be wearing a green jacket by this time next year?

A special guest, who has artfully dodged the press, was sitting behind the 18th green on Sunday at the Masters. Her green chair — at Augusta National “patrons” must buy or bring a specific Masters chair if they want a seat on the grass — was in the second row, where she spent the late afternoon watching the last groups, including Bubba Watson and Louis Oosthuizen make pars on the last hole in regulation to force a sudden-death playoff.

Well, the guy in red probably didn't serve much help in your pool. Geez, Tiger!

Per popular request, here are the complete scores, list of trophies and “cash distribution.” I’m surprised they disclose such details and it’s not a private matter! Just kidding.

Hope at least some of you took home the pot. Please share the good, the bad and the ugly, along with who was on your team (and the format of the pool). Cheers!
