Oosty ousts Rory in this race

In case you missed it, I wrote a story on Golf.com last week (earlier this week, whatever) on the battle for the purest swing in golf between Rory McIlroy and Louis Oosthuizen, who were paired together for two straight days at the Deustche Bank Championship.

Reading Davis

American Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III is making his phone calls tonight — you know, THE phone calls to the four chosen ones and then at least three to the guys who will be left behind. Love will formally make his announcement to the world at 10am in New York.

Until then, we can continue to play the guessing game. (Woot!) Technically, there are four remaining spots to fill, but there are really only three — Steve Stricker is a lock (good putter and Tiger’s designated partner). Even Stricker, who had a solid week with a T13 finish at the Deustche Bank Championship, seems to expect good news.

Lou-Ry

Louis Oosthuizen put on a clinic in Sunday’s third round of the Deutsche Bank Championship. He set several new tournament records, including posting the lowest 54-hole total (19-under), making the most consecutive birdies (seven), and carding the lowest score on the front nine at TPC Boston (29).

At one point, Oosthuizen was cruising a la the Open Championship at St. Andrews in 2010, where he won by a decisive seven strokes. At one point here in the present day, Louis led by seven shots over Rory McIlroy, who recently won the PGA Championship, his second-career major, at Kiawah Island.

On Saturday at 7:41pm Luke Donald tweeted a phone number, followed by “Gil Hanse is a…c**K ha ha,” as you can see above. Hanse is the architect who originally designed TPC Boston, and redid the 18th green, which debuted this week at the Deutsche Bank Championship.

Both tweets were deleted within 10-15 minutes, so chances are you missed them — unless you have no life, like me (and, naturally, your first instinct is to take screenshots).

Shortly after, CBSSports.com’s Shane Bacon posted the offending comments and Luke’s cell number (which obviously will be changed shortly) on his personal website Dogs That Chase Cars.

Found: Tiger's putting stroke

Ah, what a glorious way to kick off the Deutsche Bank Championship and stir up some excitement in the second leg of the FedExCup PLAYOFFS, heading into the long weekend (reminder: traditionally, this event runs from Friday-Monday due to Labor Day). Of course I’m referring to Tiger Woods, who cruised to a seven-under 64 in the first round on Friday to share the early lead with Jeff Overton.

Surprise? Shock? Both?

Similar to last week at The Barclays, the first of four legs in the FedExCup playoffs, there’s more than just a tournament to follow at the Deutsche Bank Championship, which includes the top-100 finishers in points — there’s the race for the top 70 to advance to the BMW Championship at Crooked Stick.

For all the pomp and money (and more) that’s on the line, the atmosphere has certainly been relaxed. In fact, I can’t remember the last time vibe felt this relaxed. May? April? I know it’s early in the week and the tournament has started, and I expect tensions to mount as the week progresses, but so far, it’s not exactly what you might expect for the pressure-packed PLAYOFFS.
