Tiger Woods claims the relationship between him and his caddie, Stevie Williams, is not strained despite the comments he made after the final round of the US Open that were broadly interpreted as critical.

After storming off the course the other week, he scolded himself for going against his instincts and indirectly blamed Stevie for giving him the poor advice. “Stevie said take dead aim right at it, and in my heart I said ‘no’. There was no chance,” Tiger said. “I have a sand wedge in my hand, and I can’t play at that flag. You land the ball on the green, it will go past the flags.”

Speaking to the press for the first time since the US Open at the site of this week’s AT&T National, Dustin Johnson appears to have recovered from his almost-too-painful-to-watch collapse after holding the 54-hole lead. Which doesn’t surprise me. Somehow, DJ Styles doesn’t strike me as the type to let such memories stick.

Doffing his cap to the gallery, a misty-eyed Tom Watson made his way up to the 17th green for probably the last time at a US Open. Next to him was his son, Michael, who was carrying his bag on Father’s Day. To their right, the crowd lining the fairway to the fans sitting in the grandstands had broken out in a warm standing ovation. At the foot of the stands, I clapped while I tried to soak in the moment and looked on in awe of Watson, particularly the memories he shared with the 17th hole at Pebble Beach on US Open Sundays.

I was trawling the practice areas, like I usually do on Mondays when I’m at a tournament, just trying to get the lay of the land (which is huge, by the way). While I was trying to take pictures with my new non-crappy real camera, I noticed a theme — I couldn’t get clear shots even inside the ropes because almost every player was surrounded by a group of dudes.

Like in the picture above, somewhere behind that mob is 18-year-old Ryo Ishikawa, who was patiently sitting in a chair while reporters, handlers, equipment reps, coaches, family, friends and pets hovered. You get the point. Okay, so Ryo’s case was (obviously) a tad more intense than the others, but still, just see for yourselves…

Do you know what’s better than coffee (and perhaps more important, an alarm clock)? Four adorable little Shipnucks! Alright, I’m about to head out to Pebble Beach to check in and all that fun stuff, but other than that, do I even know what I’m doing? Sorta. I’ll be trawling the practice areas to try and chat with players (Mondays are fantastic for that), walking the course (for the first time ever!), taking heaps of pictures and perhaps some video. This afternoon I’m attending a TaylorMade event with Dustin Johnson and I’m told I’ll get a few minutes with him.

As always, if you have tips and suggestions, please feel free to pass them along — I’m here to give you, the reader, what you want. Duh.
