Five More for the Bodies Count

ESPN’s “Bodies” issue drops in October, but everyone’s already talking about Christina Kim, Sandra Gal and Anna Grzebien, who decided to strip down for it. Thing is, they could have devoted more space to LPGA women not including the obvious choices (Gulbis, Rawson, etc.). If ESPN decides to make this an annual issue, here are five more candidates whose body parts should be considered for next year.

Erica Blasberg, 25 — This former Arizona Wildcat was named 2003 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and a two-time All-American before she bolted after her sophomore year to turn pro. She’s soft-spoken with a good sense of humor, but feisty on the course, where she can throw a club farther than Tiger. On her website it says, “She enjoys running, reading magazines and shopping.” She forgot “partying.” She is also already a fixture on the Vegas club circuit.

Paula Creamer, 22 — The Pink Panther is one of the best players on the planet.  She has 8 career victories and was the 2005 Rookie of the Year. She’s also a 3-time member of the US Solheim Cup. And, she’s limber! “I love doing cartwheels, handsprings, and most tumbling.”

Kim Hall, 28 — This classic blonde bombshell is a Stanford graduate, where she was a three-time member of the All-Pac-10 Team. She lives in Vegas in the off-season but unlike most professional golfers, she does not have a gambling problem.

Jeehae Lee, 26 — The beautiful, brilliant Yale grad didn’t take the normal route to the LPGA. She had secured an investment banking job in Hong Kong, but ditched it to become a professional golfer. She’s fluent in three languages — Korean, Mandarin Chinese and English. She can bark better than any dog. Apparently she can pick up large objects with her toes.

Paige Mackenzie, 26 —An All-American at the University of Washington, she ended her senior year ranked the top amateur in the country. She was also a member of the 2006 Curtis Cup Team. She has an IQ of like a gazillion and gives excellent dating advice. She’s a big sports junkie and won’t date a guy that knows less than her. Plus, she has an award-winning butt.

LPGA Players De-Lock for a Good Cause

LPGA Tour players partnered up with Pantene Beautiful Lengths at the P&G Beauty NW Arkansas Championship to make wigs out of their pretty, long hair for women living with cancer. Paige Mackenzie, Christina Kim, Carri Wood, Lisa Strom, Chella Choi, Vicky Hurst, Stacy Lewis, Heather Daly-Donofrio, Jeehae Lee and many others attended the “ponytail cutting” event to support a great cause. How cute are Paige, Jeehae, Christina and Stacy’s new looks? I especially like Paige’s. Maybe because it looks like mine.

LPGA Tour Pro Jeehae Lee chats with me about her rookie year, fantasy foursome, and an..errr..interesting fan letter that she’s received. But she loves all our fans and appreciates the support, of course.

Another version of the interview is posted on the PUMA Golf blog. Go HERE to check out what Jeehae had to say on other topics.

Since it was her birthday yesterday, I thought it’d be fitting to publish this today. OK, you got me, fail on my part. Happy (belated) Birthday, Jeehae!!!

I caught up with PUMA athlete and the hottest rookie on the LPGA, Jeehae Lee, at the Sybase Classic in Clifton, New Jersey. Jeehae chats with me about various topics, such as her fantasy foursome, Twitter, and the hip gear she sports on Tour.

Check out the video interview on the PUMA Golf blog HERE!

OMG! it’s a contest! I have a few Sybase Classic hats that are autographed by LPGA players, including Suzann Pettersen, Meg Mallon, Se Ri Pak, Janice Moodie, Lisa Strom, Julieta Grenada, Ai Miyazato, Vicky Hurst, Morgan Pressel, Kelli Kuehne, Paige Mackenzie, Christina Kim, Jeehae Lee, and others.
I figured I’d have a little contest each week to see who gets a hat. This week, I thought I’d ask you, the readers, to submit your best story about the lengths you went to get an autograph from a celebrity. I like funny ones, but it doesn’t really matter. Email me at steph [dot] wei [at] gmail [dot] com. The deadline is Wednesday, May 27.
I thought it’d only be fair if I shared a few of my own stories.
So, remember the glory days of the Seattle Sonics? Throughout most of the ’90s? When George Karl was the coach? I sure do. The best starting five ever - Gary Payton, Shawn Kemp (before he had like, 25 kids and got fat), Detlef Schrempf, Sam Perkins and Hersey Hawkins..oh, and I can’t forget Nate McMillan, the fifth man!
But I digress. When I was 12 or 13, I was that loser kid who got to every game two hours early to watch the guys warm-up and shove cards or memorabilia in their face to autograph. Or, sometimes I’d get to Key Arena so early that I’d be the kid who waited for them to open the doors. Yeah, true life. (Go ahead, judge me!) However, throughout the years, I did manage to get autographs from each of the ballers I mentioned above.
My second story is less embarrassing. At the ‘98 PGA Championship, I was behind the 18th green when Tiger Woods finished his round. Mike “Fluff” Cowan, his caddy, was giving away Tiger’s ball. He made several attempts to hand it to the kids who were closer than me, but to no avail. On his third try, the ball bounced right into my hands! SCORE. I still have the ball which has “TIGER” inscribed on it.
OK, your turn! Ready. Set. GO!.

Ask The Ladies!

I’m trekking out to the LPGA Sybase Classic in the Dirty Jerz tomorrow. I know, I know - it’s just the Pro-Am. But, I’m super excited to see the gals show the sponsors how it’s done. OK, not going to lie - I’ve been warned it might be a little boring. But, hey, I don’t really care ‘cause I just love golf (and supporting the ladies)!

And, don’t fret, I’ll be there for the actual tournament as well.

Throughout the week, I’ll be hanging out with Paige Mackenzie, Jeehae Lee, Anna Grzebien, among others - they said that they’ll introduce me to some of their Tour buddies. (By the way, I’m holding you guys to that.) Maybe I’ll get lucky and they’ll let me inside the ropes, or as Anna calls it, “the circus.”

But I digress. The plan is to conduct some short video interviews.

With that said, what do you guys want to hear about? Drop them in the comments below!

Who's That Girl?!?

It’s Jeehae Lee, the hottest rookie on the LPGA! Her story is especially unique - It’s one of those Cinderella stories that you can’t help but find inspiring. I mean, let’s be real, how many Yale (or Ivy League for that matter) grads pursue a career as a pro golfer? Very few.

Jeehae spent a few years battling it out on the Futures Tour with the ultimate goal of reaching her desired destination, the LPGA. And, this past December, her efforts and determination were rewarded. She finished T-12 in the final stage of Q-school. No easy feat!

I caught up with Jeehae recently about her experience and road to the Tour. Take a lil’ gander at what she had to say:

What was the experience like going through LPGA Q-school?

After I had made it through the first stage of the 2008 q-school on the number(that was a miracle in itself, because with 5-6 groups left to come in, +3 looked like the number. Those 5-6 groups were at even or better before the final round began…I was at +5. I had pretty much given up! But two girls that were at even par after round 3 shot +6 in their final rounds(one of which doubled the last hole)! So I got in at the last minute. I worked so so so hard for two and a half months at ChampionsGate. When I arrived at LPGA international for final stage of q-school, I felt totally calm and confident. I spent enough time away from the Futures Tour and those other players and I stopped comparing my game to others. It didn’t matter what my scoring average was for 2008. It didn’t matter that I finished 78th on the futures tour money list and that I was up against the strongest field LPGA has seen at q-school. I felt like a new player with a blank slate.

How do you feel about your game and how has it progressed over the past few years?

I’ve come a long way especially in my short game area since last year. Before I turned professional, I had never spent more than 10 minutes working on my short game. Being able to hit many different shots around the greens is key to scoring. I’ve also gained close to 30 yards with my driver. I’ve always been a pretty good ball-striker, because of my natural athleticism and hand-eye coordination.

What’s your rookie season been like so far?

Not too startlingly different than the past two years. The traveling is still hard on the body, and golf is still golf. We just play in nicer places and for more money. I’m also wearing nicer clothes. I thought I’d be more startstruck than I was. The only time I felt nervous was when I met Lorena [Ochoa] and Karrie [Webb]. Lorena said “Congratulations” for making the Tour! :D

What’s your favorite part about being on Tour? And, least favorite?

People. And people. I love meeting different people and making new friends, and for the most part players are friendly and normal. Some are exceptionally great and down to earth. However, there are some people that are unbelievably sheltered and selfish. Some are completely devoid of respect and common decency that I used to take for granted from others. It’s like their motto in life is “For oneself. For money. For attention.” If it doesn’t fall under one of these, it’s not worth doing.

Any funny anecdotes over the past few years?

My first time going into private housing on the Futures Tour, I broke the toilet and the bed I was sleeping on within the first 4 hours of getting there. I snuck out to Wal-Mart to get a plunger after dinner, and my friend who was in the same housing that week helped me fix the toilet. The bed was just broken. The wooden frame had shattered and there was no way to fix it or cover it up. I found out later that the bed has been in the family for three generations. I swear I didn’t do anything except to turn over gently to my side!

What’s in your bag?

Who are your closest friends?

I’m fortunate to have my boyfriend with me on Tour. It’s so important to have people that truly care about your well-being out here. I’m also fortunate to have a good friend, Seol-An Jeon, as my caddy. Last year, I became very good friends with Sunny Oh throughout the season on the Futures Tour, and we happened to make it onto the LPGA together through Q-school.

What do you do when you’re not playing golf?

I enjoy cooking. As I get older (wow, I’m 26 in a month), I enjoy spending time with a few special friends at home with good food and drinks more than rowdy nights out. I still love dancing all night with friends at clubs in NYC when I have time to visit, but these days, I’m more of a homebody.

Without a doubt, Jeehae took a risk after graduating, which is quite respectable given that many of her peers take the “safe” route (you know, banking, law, or saving the world). She turned down an investment banking job in Hong Kong, no less! (On second thought, I don’t blame her; 100 hour work weeks in a stuffy office crunching numbers isn’t exactly fun. Trust me.)

Not only is Jeehae a talented golfer, she’s also an incredible person - inside and out. She’s fiery, classy, honest, humble, witty, super intelligent, and beautiful. She has a laugh that’s simply contagious. And, she’s sporting some of PUMA’s hottest Golf gear (way to go by securing one of the games most likeable rising stars)!

Last I spoke with Jeehae, she said that she feels great about her game. And, confidence goes a long way - as does experience. I’d watch for her to continue to progress over the season. Plus, how can you not want to cheer for her??

Good luck this week! I’ll be out at Sybase Classic in the Dirty Jerz, and I can’t wait to break out those pom-poms and root for her in real life!

By the way, you should follow her on Twitter.

Meet The Hottest Rookie On The LPGA: Jeehae Lee
If you don’t know the name Jeehae Lee yet, you should. Back in December, the stunning Yale graduate qualified for the LPGA Tour on her first attempt, which is no easy feat (and finished T12th, no less)!
Last week, in a very competitive field, Jeehae placed T57th, along with teen phenom Michelle Wie, at the J Golf Phoenix LPGA International. Not bad for just her third start. I would look out for her to play well and continue moving up the leaderboard over the course of the tournament season.
What makes Jeehae stand out is that she’s not just the LPGA’s next best player, but she’s incredibly intelligent and beautiful. Attention sponsors: if you haven’t noticed already, you should get on that!
I’m going to shamelessly name-drop. Jeehae and I were teammates on the Yale Women’s Golf Team. As most competitive golfers know, the Ivy League isn’t exactly breeding grounds for future LPGA players.
That’s what makes Jeehae’s story particularly inspiring. It took great audacity for her to follow her dream and embark on the journey to the pro circuit.  There’s no doubt her success is a direct result of not only talent, but hard work, discipline and perseverence as well.  Jeehae is surely living the dream and she deserves every moment of it.
