For all the Tom Watson fans out there, Jim Frank, former editor of Golf Magazine, posted an appreciation of Tom’s terrific new instructional DVD set (which makes a great present, by the way). He also has some very nice and interesting things to say about Tom’s career. I wish I had been born to witness that era, but Watson’s given us some pretty great memorable moments the past few years, too.

I’ve had enough of Tom Watson already… Put the old guy in a home already and let the PGA’s younglings into the limelight. Your ship has sailed Tom. Let the new guard show you what they’ve got…
Kmo, are you serious? You must be one of those Tiger Woods fans who doesn’t watch golf unless Tiger is playing. You’ve probably only played for a few years too because you have no respect for one of golf’s greatests.
For a 60-year-old man to lose the British Open in a playoff is absolutely amazing, not to mention the eight majors he won throughout his career.
A little respect. Let the new guard show him what they got. If he’s so washed up why didn’t they kick his ass in Turnberry in 2009? If he can still play with the young ones, let him. Kmo and the other pseudo golf fans are just gonna have to deal with it.
Tom Watson was my golf hero growing up and he was an amazing player and great to the gallery. Tom was to Jack as Phil is to Tiger. Wall to wall coverage makes it seem like today’s generation is better and deeper, but I don’t think that is really the case with the top tier players.
At Turnberry in 1977 Tom Watson reached a competitive level in his duel with Nicklaus that Woods has never come close to. It was a glaring ommission in Woods’ body of work. Head to head, the two best golfers on the planet, exchanging blows, destroying the rest of the field, with a major title and historical title to the winner and a fight to the last putt. That continues to be the ‘high water mark’ of tournament golf drama in the last half century.
And, who has Woods duelled with in majors? Bob May, Chris Dimarco, Rocco Mediate, Woody Austin, and a 19-yr old Sergio Garcia.
