I’m sure you’ve all seen “the most unbelievable, gutsy shot” that Jack Nicklaus has ever seen and he added during the 18th green trophy presentation at Muirfield Village, “I’ve seen a lot of shots in golf and I don’t think I’ve seen a better one.”
That’s a bold statement, but I’ve wasted a lot of time hit the replay button so many times that I’ve lost track.
It was pretty cool (and a privilege) to see it in person. Of course, by “pretty cool,” I mean “mind-blowingly awesome.”
When he blew it over the green, I, along with the rest of the world, thought he was screwed. Then, he hit arguably the best shot in history under the circumstances.
I’ll never forget the vintage Tiger right-arm fist-pump and roar. The last time I can actually recall him reacting similarly was at the 2009 Arnold Palmer Invitational when he rolled in a long putt (30-40 feet I think) for a walk-off birdie to win.
As for the actual shot it was apparently very similar or reminiscent of Tiger’s chip-in on No. 11 when he won here in ’09.
I shook my head after I was nearly knocked off balance from the crowd’s reaction. I thought to myself, did that just happen? Of course it did — after all, I felt something shift around the 14th hole, where I started to feel like I was watching vintage Tiger. I tweeted after he hit his tee shot on No. 15: “Tiger looking as confident as I’ve seen since back nine of third round at 2010 US Open at Pebble Beach…”
Wait, that happened? Two-down with four to play, Tiger birdied three of the last four holes. to win his 73rd PGA Tour victory and tying Jack Nicklaus’ record at Jack’s tournament. It couldn’t have been scripted better.
Oh yeah, golf also won today.

Remember back when it was fun to root for Tiger? Those were the days…
“That was SICK!!!” love Gary McCord.
@Fehertwit said it best. “I would not have believed that possible.”
It truly was an impressive shot. He hit the shot in the only manner that was possible to keep the ball on the green, the fact that it went in was just icing on the cake. I do believe we are a little quick to label things “the best ever” these days. There have been tons of incredible shots in the history of golf, and I’m not so sure that shot was even in the top two or three of Tiger’s best, much less in the history of the game. Again, not that it wasn’t a great shot, but lets let the ink dry on the winner’s check before we say it was the best ever.
Jack said it was the best shot he’d ever “seen” under the circumstances.
There have been tons of great shots that Jack did not see.
It was an incredible shot.
And not to be “that guy”, but I believe technically it was more of a “pitch” than a “chip.
No, it was more like a flop. Used his 60 and took a full swing and cut the ball.
WUP: “I’d also make a crack about how Tiger should focus on winning at 36, but I’d just be reminded he won two months ago (duh!), which I’m well aware of. Let’s start with the Memorial Tournament, where he’s won four times. In his last appearance in 2010 he placed tied for 19th.”
Any more sage advice for Tiger?
Yes, keep the blonde around.
I enjoyed the press conference. Tiger and Jack looked like they were having a good time, especially the jokes about the difficulty of the pin placement at 16.
Still with Alastair’s step-daughter?
“it might go in. It might go in. It might go in. It is in.” CLASSIC.
Another shot for the highlight reel of Tiger Woods.
This guy can still wow the crowds when he wants to.
Of course Jack is going to say it was the greatest shot…why…because it won his Memorial and of course we all think that the Mem is the greatest golf tourney…
give me a break.
Phil M shot on 13 on Masters Sunday, Watson’s 17 chip in
Nicklaus 1 iron on 17 Pebble…..shots that win majors are the greatest shots.
This shot was probably in the top 1000 to win a nice invitational
Would’ve liked to see Rickie’s reaction… looks rather unfazed from behind.
