Since it’s been well established that Oakmont is playing excruciatingly difficult and scores are going to be discouragingly high, what’s the over/under on anyone breaking par in the first round of the US Women’s Open? There’s gotta be someone who lights up the course and fires even par, right? With all the reports of the grueling challenge the ladies have ahead of them, it’s hard to say.
Here’s another ominous quote from USGA set-up chief Mike Davis:
“We had a lot of comments saying, ‘If they get this course any harder, no one’s going to break 75,’ ” he said. “You know, some of the players that maybe don’t play championship golf on a regular basis, you may see scores up in the 90s. My sense is this golf course is very much the same right now as it was in 2007.”
Encouraging! Honestly, I can see the players being seriously traumatized if they post a score in the 90s. I don’t care how difficult the course is. I mean, it’s almost cruel to inflict such a blow to their morale. But I guess that’s what the US Open is all about — to test the mind, body and spirit of every player with the champion being the one who manages to keep it together the best.
In the spirit of everyone and their moms guessing the cutline and winning score, let’s take our shots at the low score and the high score of the day. If someone manages to guess correctly, A) I’ll be astonished, and B) he/she will be rewarded with a copy of Christina Kim and Alan Shipnuck’s book, Swinging From My Heels.

I’m thinking the winning score will be somewhere near +2 to +5 for the ladies this week.
I too don’t want to see any scores in the 90′s and I don’t think we will. THey may flirt with it but I’m not sure any of these players will get to 90 on the card.
I have no issues with the way the USGA has the course setup for them, its the US Open after all. It’s suppose to be hard to play that course.
Low score – 70
High score – 88
I like that, Eddie. That’s confident, positive thinking.
Put me down for a 68 as the low score of the week. Probably on Friday afternoon or Saturday if they get the rains on Friday.
Winning score will still be over par.
I’m not as optimistic on the highest scores. There are a lot of amateurs in the field. There will be at least 2 players missing the cut at +40 or more…unless they pull out.
I’m going price is right, I’ll take a 71 and an 91.
I think the tendency before these events start is to overstate the difficulty a bit. Certainly Oakmont could be set up so that 20-over wins, but I think the USGA is more aware of player embarrassment than they have been in the past, especially at a course that doesn’t need any help protecting par.
Looking at the early scores, it seems someone will shoot in red numbers and I don’t think the winning score will get too far over par. There’s going to be a sprinkling of very high numbers though. Wheels will come off, they’re already off for Michelle Wie. I imagine the carnage peaks around 91.
Low – 68
High – 88
Low – 68
High – 87
low – 69
high – 93
High of 100 and low of 79 with high humidity. Wait- been watching too many weather girls-uh-persons. Hey WUP- that might be a plan B in life. Not sure you could show the clippers coming out of Canada though. Just teasing- you know I love ya.
Oakmont seems to be pretty brutal today. My girl Morgan stumbled in bogey- double B. and still shot a very respectable +3. Creamer, Lincicome, survived did fine. Long hitting Michelle got clubbed like a baby seal by Oakmont.
