The morning guys are well into their first rounds and the leaderboard is, well, an early Thursday US Open leaderboard. You never know who’s going to be on there. KJ Choi has been leading the charge. He started the day three-over after three before he caught fire to get to three-under through 14. I’m off to watch him play the last few holes.
Mike Weir, Ian Poulter and David Toms are all at two-under. Interestingly enough, Poults had never seen the course before he arrived this past weekend. Meanwhile, wild Phil showed up today — not the good kind of wild, but the kind where he’s dunking it in the water and missing putts. He’s four-over through 14. Whoops!
By the way, take a closer look at the above picture of Miguel Angel Jimenez. Can you see what I’m talking about? See the close-up after the jump.
“You never seen this before? It’s for my cigar,” Jimenez said in a thick Spanish accent to Vijay Singh, who was hitting in front of him on Wednesday afternoon.
Classic.

Sweet! Somebody ought to get Rush one of those, so he doesn’t have a cigar hanging from his fat face when he’s teeing it up on The Haney Project.
That cigar’s gotta affect the roll of the ball on the greens.
Clear the Golf Channel will do anything for ratings. Unlike ESPN they will be able to edit Rush’s comments
Frank – look at the GC’s loyal following, older white dudes who are mostly republican. No harm in the GC going after ratings, not my favorite public person and I probably won’t watch the next season the show because of the choice. It’s a polarizing choice though, like if they had picked Hillary Clinton instead as the polar-left opposite, it would have irked the other portion of viewers.
oh, and **loving** the scoring on day #1 so far – PERFECT. -1 to lead, hurray! This is how a US open leaderboard should look, and the guys going out this afternoon should find harder conditions than the morning groups did.
Seriously ? Rush Limbaugh is the next Haney Project ? Sounds like the word hasn’t gotten out that Haney is 0 for 2 on his projects. Might not be a great idea to get on that show.
By the way – what he said on ESPN was correct – it was a shot at the media, which got twisted by the media to make it a racial comment. He was supporting McNabb.
Mickelson finds new and exciting ways to hit the water, doesn’t he ? Amazing. At least he got it out of the way on Friday. Maybe he can avoid it on Sunday.
Court: I agree and disagree with your thoughts on Rush on ESPN. What he said wasn’t racist, he was taking a shot at the media. I just think he is was dead wrong in that the media was “desirous” of a successful black qb. McNabb got slaughtered from the day he got booed at the draft until today. He is basically Phil Mickelson before Phil finally got a major. A truly fantastic player that contended all the time (numerous NFC Champ games and an SB with no help at WR)that couldnt get over the hump. He is/was John Elway (before he rode off in the sunset with two SB’s) and Dan Marino. Both of those guys are lauded as heros and D Mc. is scoffed at by fans of the Eagles, the public AND the media. Rush was just wrong, not racist.
Wow, tiger from the bunker on #2 looked like Tiger of old. Shoulders very level, picked it clean, and left it to what 7 or 8 feet.
kr – I’m with you on how good McNabb was in Philly and how little appreciation he got – but come on – the media (except in Philly) did everything they could to make sure everybody knew the color of his skin whenever possible. When Limbaugh made that comment, he wasn’t playing particularly well, but the media was still singing his praises. The boo’s he got on draft day weren’t from the media – they were from boneheaded fans in the room. (Philly fans are among the worst in the world with their behavior)
I think Tiger should be the next Haney Project!
Miguel has had that Hole in One Cigar Holder since 2007, and it is still going strong! although the next one you see him with should be gold or silver!
