Tiger Woods’ Al Ruwaya design project, a grandiose golf course surrounded by mansions, palaces and the works, has been shelved, according to the AP. Asked about the progress on Sunday at the Farmers Insurance Open, Tiger replied, “It’s been put on hold for right now. A lot of projects are out there. It’s still there. We’ve got six completed holes and a few that were about to be grassed before construction was halted. Everything is on hold.”
In a statement on Monday the developer cited “market conditions” as the reason behind the decision to suspend construction. More via the AP:
The golf course developer, part of Dubai Properties Group, left open the possibly that work could someday resume.
“These conditions will continue to be monitored,” said a statement to the AP after questions about the status of the long-delayed golf complex. “A decision will be made in the future when to restart the project.”
Only a few holes have been completed on the $1 billion course, planned as the centerpiece for a complex of 100 villas, 75 mansions, 22 palaces, a boutique hotel, a golf academy and 30,000 full-grown imported trees.
The news doesn’t come as a surprise with the post-crash Dubai economy and recent reports. In November The Guardian’s Lawrence Donegan paid the construction site a visit and found little other than tumbleweeds and sand.
So, is the project kaput? Sounds like it is until further notice.
Tiger will play in the Dubai Desert Classic next week.

Hold that Tiger course!

Just imagining the sheer amounts of water that must be required to construct and maintain this boggles the mind.
Looks like a great place to put a golf course… if there were no other habitable places on Earth.
Wonder if the major races coming up shortly in Dubai will be affected. Perhaps if not this year, maybe next year.
They might have to trade the rows of white couches for lawn chairs.
The Karma Train just keeps rolling away from the station.
Looks like a really, really green project…

…
Trevor, about the same amount as Shadow Creek in Vegas.
he should stick to playing golf for now and design later. just as an aside, does anyone know when Jack started designing courses? i would guess that he had either 0 or 1 (masters) major win after getting into the design business.
Jack’s first design was a collaboration with Pete Dye to create Harbour Town in the late 1960′s. I could be wrong, but I think his first solo was Glen Abby near Toronto in the mid 1970′s followed by Muirfield Village. Anyways, he still won a bunch of majors after he started designing.
The universe must be really mad at Tiger – one thing after another.
…and I’m guessing an aerial view of the course in a few years will show it entirely reclaimed by the desert.
