Tiger Woods is keeping his word and adding a new tournament to his schedule for the second time this year, The Greenbrier Classic in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, from July 5-8.
“We’ve worked really hard for over two years to try and bring Tiger Woods here and he has now agreed,” Justice told The Register-Herald this morning. “I’m really happy and I know all of the fans will be really happy to get a chance to watch Tiger play.”
Similar to the Honda Classic in early March, Woods, who finished T40 at The Players, has never played the tournament at The Greenbrier Resort’s Great White course.
According to TigerWoods.com, the 14-time major champion is also playing in the Memorial Tournament, May 31-June 3, at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio; the U.S. Open, June 14-17, at the Olympic Club in San Francisco; the AT&T National, June 28-July 1, at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md.; The Open Championship, July 19-22, at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club in Lytham St. Annes, Lancashire, England; and the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational, Aug. 2-5, at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio.
I’m assuming he’ll also enter the final major of the year, the PGA Championship, Aug. 9-12, at Kiawah Island Resort (Ocean), at Kiawah Island, South Carolina.
With the extra week in the tournament schedule between the U.S. Open and the Open, Tiger will make two starts in between the two major championships, including the AT&T National, which benefits his foundation. The Greenbrier is the week after and only in its third year, with Stuart Appleby firing a rare 59 in the final round to win in the inaugural event in 2010 and Scott Stallings persevering in a playoff as a PGA Tour rookie in 2011.
Phil Mickelson, who played at The Greenbrier last year, has also committed to this summer’s field.
How is this somewhat random tournament in the middle of nowhere West Virginia (though I’m told it’s quite fun since the resort has a casino) attracting such marquee players? Well, there’s been chatter that the event pays guys like Tiger and Phil appearance fees, which has not been denied or confirmed, but is implied in CBSSports.com’s Steve Elling’s report.
Hey, fellow scribes, you know what this means — we all have an extra tournament added to our schedules, too. I’ve never been to West Virginia, but I hear it’s quite nice in mid-July.

Reps!!
Thats what I am talking about. He has got to get them somewhere. I like this event.
Too bad he couldn’t commit to his wife. or caddy or coach. or trainer.
^salty
Ms. Wei hit up the Factory Stores and hang at Snowshoes Mountain….that’s what we used to do back in the day. I’d take WV over rural New Jersey anyday.
The Classic is a great event. I would highly recommend going.
where’s Chris?
I agree this doesn’t feel right….I got this one:
I’m waiting for this very unstable Tiger to throw a punch at someone on the course. It’s obvious he cannot control his emotions at all. Nicklaus, Palmer, Watson, never, ever threw a club, or smashed one against their bag, take a purposeful divot, not talk to the reporter after a loss, swear out loud, etc. To compare Tiger to one of these guys is impossible. Tiger is the biggest bum in sports today. The puke couldn’t keep his thing in his pants while his gorgeous and devoted wife was giving birth. Go out with a few women while your wife is pregnant? Hey, way to go Tiger! Only reason his remaining sponsors haven’t dumped him is because of money. They have the same ethics as Tiger.
Tiger Woods…wasn’t he a golfer on the PGA Tour?
Where the white women at?
TW = #7 ranked player in the world, he’s not doing that bad…
World rankings system = horribly flawed.
The Greenbrier has a tremendous amount of history behind it and has been a destination for the nation’s elite for well over a century.
26 presidents have stayed at The Greenbrier and during the Cold War a secret bunker was built to house Congress in the event of nuclear incident.
The Greenbrier has hosted a Ryder Cup and a Solheim Cup, among other professional golf events. For many years the Pro Emeritus was Sam Snead, and the position currently belongs to Tom Watson. Tom actually skipped the Sr. US Open last year to honor his commitment to The Greenbrier, kinds of give some insight into the level of loyalty the place generates.
And you describe the situation as “random tournament in the middle of nowhere West Virginia”?!?
@RandyWatson..classic dude. WUP has it own ‘meme’ it’s the post from Chris.
Can’t stop laughing!!
Thanks….Chris is a nut…but he is our nut.
we need ‘like’ buttons here….+1 to Randy….
