Maybe I’m drinking the kool-aid, but perhaps Tiger Woods enjoys these team competitions more than we think. When was the last time we saw him look so genuinely happy and human while celebrating with his team and the Fanatics, the Aussie group that attends big sporting events? Heck, he even sported an Australian rally cap that he probably got from some random dude in the crowd!
It makes sense that he’d like the team atmosphere when you think about it — his world is pretty lonely (including golf) and it’s been a pretty rough couple of years.
“This is an unbelievable team,” said Tiger in his post-win presser at Royal Melbourne. “I’ve been on a variety of different teams over the years, and this has been just a great atmosphere to be around.”
He even was so selfless that he didn’t want to be the one who sealed the deal for another U.S. triumph at the Presidents Cup.
“Kind of a double-edged sword,” he said, when asked about clinching the winning point in his 4&3 victory over Aaron Baddeley. “I was hoping it wasn’t going to come down to us. I was telling Stricks, I was hoping we could have a victory lap back here and play the last few holes and have a celebration.”
Well, as we saw, he sure made up for the celebration part afterwards. Like I’ve said repeatedly, Australia is like his prozac.
I know, I know — how could Tiger not be in a fantastic mood? — he had just clinched the winning point for his team, hit the ball like pre-hydrant-era Tiger, and made every putt he looked at. All week he finally looked comfortable with his swing changes and his ballstriking improved with each rep. It was uncanny to see a (five-hour) glimpse of the former dominant golfer. After all, it’s been nearly two years. Even during his cheery days, I don’t think I’ve ever seen him like this (not saying much since I only know what I saw on TV even pre-Thanksgiving night in ’09).
OK, so Tiger was naturally thrilled, but he also won the match that sealed the Cup in ’09 at Harding Park and I don’t recall him acting like the fans were his new BFFs. (Fine, the fans in ’09 might not have been as exuberant and he ran around with the rest of the ’99 Ryder Cup team.) Let’s also remember the home team had just lost, yet the Australians were celebrating with Tiger and the other Americans. And yes, I realize Aussies are just really friendly people who love Tiger and sports.
When have you ever seen him look so thrilled while being mobbed?
Usually he signs a few autographs, with a zombie-like expression, with five security guards flanked on every side. He posed for pictures with the mob, too!
Okay, now this is just crazy. Am I seeing what I think I’m seeing? Tiger is touching other random humans! It’s gotta be Photoshopped, right? No, it’s not? Wow.
I mean, what’s next? Following his first strokeplay win in over two years, he’s going to make a victory lap and give the trophy to the masses as he poses for pictures with them, a la John Daly after winning the ’95 Open Championship at St. Andrews. Okay, that’s taking it a little too far, but it seems like anything is possible now.
Tiger was gracious, as well, especially to the man who believed in him when few did.
“I’m thankful that (Freddie) picked me,” he said. “Greg (Norman) is probably not happy about it after I closed out the Cup today.
“But it’s been great to be a part of this team. I’m thankful that Freddie believed in me to be a part of this team, and this is, as I said, just a great bunch of guys.”
I’m sure Tiger will be back to “normal” next week for the Chevron World Challenge. I haven’t had that much Koolaid.

Nice to see Tiger playing better and genuinely happy again. The dude is great for the game of golf and promotes it as much as anyone in history minus Gary Player.
This is a wonderful piece, Stephanie. I’m a Tiger fan, but when you make this a “story” about him along with pictures, anyone can believe that he is truly happy. Well laid out!
Nice article. Maybe Tiger is getting looser being a dad and getting his problems behind him. The guy made one very big mistake hurting his wife and nobody else. It happens. Now if he could get some wins in 2012 and we could see his flashes of genius all will be right with the world. One questions for you Stephanie…can you get a scoop and report on whether Tiger has a girlfriend?
@Jeff, I don’t think Tiger swing THAT way man. Just kidding bro. Yeah, I was thinking about the same thing. Sergio got 2 wins as soon as he got some, so Tiger has to be getting some. Freddie’s gotta have some good hookups, I mean Tiger’s REALLY happy.
Media always drink his kool-aid.
Until the better story is about how bitter it tastes.
Aussies don’t get to see TW play on their soil often, they learned to be ‘grateful’ – a word many in North America is not familiar with.
As for why TW let it all out in OZ, that’s because he knew he wouldn’t be heavily scrutinized by the ‘gotcha’ media.
Mr. Arrogance (Norman) was whining about all the changes he thinks needs to be made to the Prez Cup. Think he’d be saying that if the Internationals won??? Says he should have had four picks instead of two. THAT IS HILARIOUS!! His two picks could hardly have fared any worse, winning 1 out of 9 matches. So if he got his 4 picks, is he saying he didn’t want Ryo and Y.E. Yang, who played fairly well? Who would he have replaced them with? Some more Aussies that aren’t as good as those that earned their place on the team? That guy NEVER gets challenged by the press for some of the idiotic things he says. Stop giving him the mic, please.
Smiling/high-fiving/promoting America/etc. are all good for Tiger’s sponsorships. Don’t think for one moment that his behavior isn’t scripted by his agents. They know what they’re doing. They fooled most of us before, and they’re apparently fooling some of us again.
It was good to see him play well and seemingly enjoying himself. Hopefully it was genuine (and not part of an image rehab plan)and will continue.
Norman, wow, talk about sour grapes. The day after and he is making all these comments? Super rude in my opinion. First to the victors but also to his own team……no wonder they lost if he set the mood in the locker room
I’ve gotten so sick of the “Tiger clinched the Cup” business – in this match, it was just dumb luck which guy would notch the go ahead point – kind of like the guy that gets the 3rd run in a 10-2 baseball win. He played ok, but was probably no better than the 5th most valuable guy on the team (Furyk, Bubba, Simpson, Phil (for his play and engergizing MVP Furyk), Toms. But of course its all about TW once again. If this was a regular tourney, Tiger would have been slamming his trunk on Friday PM
Forgot Mahan – he was better than TW by a mile also.
Exactly. What would 4 picks have done for Norman?
Allowed to him removed deadweight like … 10th-place qualifier Ryo Ishikawa … and replace him with someone only slightly less good than … Robert Allenby?
Clearly Tiger is back. Faced with trying to take down the man, Aaron fell apart like a cheap suit. Tiger had 6 birdies in the singles, more than anyone else. 2012 is going to be a miserable year for the Tiger haters.
As I commented in another post Steph, the best shot of Tiger was just the one where he was sitting with Phil and Amy and he really looked relaxed. I am sentimental (even if I enjoy skewering Tiger and Phil more than a fair amount.) Oh- and I LOVE seeing the Shark being the one that gets bitten.
I felt great for Jimmy Furyk also. 5-0 for the lad. Put that with Pressel’s Solheim 4-0. 9-0!!
Durocher was wrong. Nice guys (and girls) don’t finish last.
Ernie’s a nice guy. He always finishes last.
I don’t see what is wrong with adopting Azinger’s Ryder Formula to the Pres Cup: Weight the current year much higher than Year one (2011 vs 2010 in this case) and give the Captain 4 picks to go after guys that didn’t make it on points. Better to mix in old vets that might not have done well in past year, but could still help the team, young guns that just started coming on, and overall guys who were hot leading up to the selection point. Ironically, if the US had used that this year, I’m thinking that Furyk would have been one of the odd guys out
