Okay, fine, he still can, but I didn’t want to mess up the rhyme. Obviously it’s not accurate to say he can’t score anymore. After all, I did see him leave with a blonde…just kidding!
Did you ever think there would be a day that hitting 15 greens in regulation and needing 34 putts would be the norm for Tiger Woods? Well, it has already started to become a pattern! If you hit 15 greens, you should shoot a hell of a lot better than 71, and you definitely shouldn’t be over par. Of course, proximity to the pin must be taken into consideration and Tiger wasn’t throwing darts in the first round of the Honda Classic, so the stats are a bit deceiving.
“I agree with that,” said Tiger when asked if it was accurate to say he didn’t hit his approaches close enough. “I hit good shots and unfortunately I just picked some bad lines. And also, I didn’t get up-and-down, I had a couple easy ones; I blew those. So a round I should have been probably 2- or 3-under par quickly turned into 1-over.
It was a ho-hum kind of round at PGA National. He hit it well off the tee (only pulled out his driver four times), but he wasn’t giving himself the greatest birdie opportunities. Basically, he two-putted from about 30 feet on every hole. His iron game was decent, but like I said, he wasn’t exactly flag hunting. He did actually hit some good putts, but burned a lot of edges.
“I hit a lot of pure putts today,” Tiger told reporters after posting a one-over 71, seven back of leader Davis Love III. “They rolled over a lot of edges. They just didn’t quite go in. But wasn’t disappointed with my lines. A couple bad reads out there. The grain kind of snagged it harder or less than I expected, but overall I hit the ball very good with my putts.”
However, Woods also wasn’t a fan of the greens (coughexcusescough) and had a hard time adjusting to the speed.
“They are hard to hit the putts hard enough for me,” said Tiger, who is tied for 68th through the first round (though there are still two players who chose not to finish 18 due to darkness). “I find that they look faster than they are putting. I had to get committed to hitting the putts harder and getting past the hole, and when I start doing that, I will make the putts. But consequently, I also 3-putted one, too. I whipped it by there.”
And then missed the five-footer coming back for par.
Random, somewhat meaningless stat of the day: Tiger was second in greens and second-to-last in total putts, while Johnson Wagner was first in greens and last in total putts.
His score wasn’t really a great indicator of the way he played, which he felt was decent.
“I just didn’t get a lot out of my round,” he said. “It’s kind of how I went today I felt like I played a lot better and I putted a lot better. I just didn’t score.”
Which was frustrating.
“Hopefully tomorrow it will be better.”

I say bring back the Scotty Cameron flatstick and let that toe swing. He takes the Nike putter back shutfaced. His chipping is looking like that too, his grip has gotten way too weak with his chips.

Ahhh.. I dont think one round makes a pattern. Tiger will be fine. I watch some of his round today and his putting looked ok — he just didnt hit the ball close enoungh to get very many good looks at the hole.
It is funny that when Tiger answers the media questions you say he is making excuses. Then when Tiger says “No Comment” on non golf related stuff you say he is being rude. Somethings is not right here
March 1st, 2012 on 8:58 pm
How is the idea that the top golfer in the world (at the time) was thinking about potentially quitting the game, or at the very least jeopardizing injury and losing focus, not golf related?
March 1st, 2012 on 9:00 pm
Other than Hunter Mahan, name a player that Foley has coached in the past that has his act together on the greens? O’Hair? Rose? Ames? I mean…Tiger’s swing looks fantastic, but for putting advice I’d see somebody else…

Actually, there is a pattern in the 11 rounds he has played this year: his putting absolutely stinks. Most rounds are well over 30 putts. Not a single good putting round played yet this year.
March 1st, 2012 on 9:23 pm
I was looking for Tiger’s figures on the “Strokes Gained Putting” stats @ PGATour.com, (he’s not there, I’m guessing not enough rounds as of last week) but I was somewhat surprised to see how awful these guys are:
Bubba – currently in 152 out of 179
Woodland – 162
Fowler – 129
If the Ryder Cup is all about sinking putts, we aren’t looking good !

Promoting Hank Haney’s book is not golf related. Tiger made it clear to the media that he was not interested in helping Hank sell his book.
March 1st, 2012 on 9:42 pm
Micelli’s question had nothing to do with “selling Haney’s book” – it was a legitimate question about Tiger’s past. Has Tiger denied it ? Is he calling Haney a liar? If you read the excerpt, Haney’s main issue is concern that Tiger is obsessed with this, at the expense of his golf. That seems golf related to me.

What will Fridays excuse be ?

BrianS, I agree with you, Micelli’s question had nothing to do with “selling Haney’s book”. It had everything to do with asking a question that he knew Tiger would not like. What does it matter if Tiger is obsessed with the Navy Seals? Is that something to be embarrassed about? I don’t think so. Tiger didn’t answer because he is PISSED at a person that he considered a friend. The thing is, I took lessons off of Hank for 8 years. Started before he even had his “golf ranch”. He is a good instructor, although his facility is known as the Hank Haney Hook Ranch locally. My problem with Hank is that he is a HUCKSTER. If Hank were alive 150 years ago, he would be traveling the country in a wagon selling a wonder tonic that “cures all”. Is it wrong for Tiger to be disappointed that he misjudged a supposed friend and now that friend is STABBING him in the back? Everything that has happened to Hank in the past 6 years has been because of his relationship with Tiger. I would think he would be slightly more appreciative but he is not because he is a HUCKSTER.

Like everyone says, Tiger is the only player that gets dissected like this. Phil was in the ballpark for a minute early this year and then he almost won 2 straight, so he buys himself a grace period.
I guess Tiger hasn’t earned the grace period(unless you count more distant history), but it’s clear to me he’s much better than he’s been but he’s nowhere near where he was. That isn’t a switch that’s going to flip, I don’t think. I think Tiger will slowly build up to his 2nd peak. Right now, I’m not sure that’s much higher than a top-10 ranking.
But if that’s the case it’s probably better to be judging Tiger as a top 15, top 25 player instead of the GOAT or GOAT 1a. Top-25 guys miss cuts, they have cold streaks, mediocre rounds. Maybe they win once, twice in a good year. If you give another golfer near his ranking Tiger’s results this year, no one would bat an eye.
I’m sure the lens for Tiger’s play won’t refocus soon, but if it did, that’d be refreshing. But, probably two of the top 3 things driving golf media are Tiger’s fans and his haters so Tiger’s off until he shoots 67 tomorrow, or until he wins, or whatever.

I also forgot to add that Micelli is a complete TOOL. I have not like him all the way to the days when he did the show with Andrew Magee.
March 1st, 2012 on 11:40 pm
Enough with the “excuses” critiicism. Of course he is going to defect blame, he’s a professional golfer. The minute he says “I suck” or “I can’t putt anymore” is the minute you can stick a fork in his career. It’s not going to happen, so please move on to something more interesting.
Unless, of course, you get some sort of sick pleasure of kicking a man when he’s down and trying to destroy what little confidence he has left.
March 1st, 2012 on 11:50 pm
It is a shame that putting has to be part of the game. Unfair really.
March 1st, 2012 on 11:56 pm
@BrianS if he had quit that would have been news. Haney may think he was losing focus or something, but Tiger won 2 majors in 05 and 06, and had one of the best scoring avg’s of his career in 07, so I’m not sure evidence supports the conclusion. Everyone needs hobbies and outlets that aren’t their job. Guys play soccer, surf, ski, dirt-bike etc, all of which could cause potential injury.
As to strokes gained putting, TW has 2 counting rounds so far this year. In fact I’d be highly suspicious of any 2012 numbers at this point in the season. You’re better off looking at 2011. Bubba still stinks.
March 2nd, 2012 on 5:37 am
@BrianS: Tiger isn’t listed in the strokes gained putting list, but if you go to his individual stats page you will see that he is the equivalent of 175th (probably needs a few more rounds to be listed). That is pretty awful, but yesterday it did seem like he was hitting good putts.
It is amazing how overly scrutinized Tiger has become lately. Golf Channel provides even more intense wall to wall coverage of Tiger over the last few years when he’s struggling (much of that is due to increased opportunity for access due to contracts) and ESPN had a constant graphic up during their afternoon Sportscenter updating Tiger’s hole by hole score. It’s obviously ratings driven but the oversaturation makes no sense to me.
Johnson Wagner led the field in greens hit and was dead last in total putts, so these types of rounds happen fairly regularly on tour (even by players in excellent form). My guess based on what I saw is that Tiger will come out in the morning and play very well. Everything did look solid except for his final score.
March 2nd, 2012 on 8:01 am
Tiger is 175th in strokes gained putting, 178th in putts less than 5′ and 175th in three-putt avoidance. He’s 1st in 3rd round scoring average, but 162nd in 4th round scoring average. He can’t putt under pressure. That’s the yips.
March 2nd, 2012 on 8:06 am
I forgot to add that he’s made 40% of his putts from 20 – 25′. That’s 1st. It’s when he gets close that he feels the pressure.
March 2nd, 2012 on 8:45 am
Have anyone asked Rory why he dumped Holly for the tennis player in the presser yet?
Looks like ‘the media’ is not doing their job. Are they protecting their meal ticket like they did with Tiger before?
March 2nd, 2012 on 9:56 am
Tiger misses me.
He just can’t admit it.
Baby come back !
March 2nd, 2012 on 10:04 am
Bla bla bla bla boo hoo boo hoo… This is about his putting which is pitiful, by anyone’s standards! Every keyboard athlete thinks they have an answer, the answer is between HIS EARS, not yours not mine not anyone else’s. He’a a basket case and will be lucky to win anymore majors until he gets out of his own way…
March 2nd, 2012 on 12:08 pm
Again, Tiger is only counting two rounds so far in his putting numbers. The final two rounds at Pebble Beach. Shotlink isn’t used for the match play, or the other courses at ATT. Sample size way, way, way to small
March 2nd, 2012 on 4:33 pm
Tiger has got 3 more rounds and surely by then the putts will start to drop. He is too good a player to keep on missing those must make putts.
