Two of the field’s biggest draws, the current world No. 1 Rory McIlroy and the former No. 1 Tiger Woods, are in jeopardy of missing the cut at The Players Championship.
McIlroy, who lost in a playoff to Rickie Fowler last week at Quail Hollow, shot a disappointing four-over 76 on Friday. Last time he missed a cut on the PGA Tour was so long ago that I can’t even remember, but if you must know, it was the 2011 Wells Fargo Championship.
While Rory is the world’s No. 1, it’s no secret he’s not a fan of TPC Sawgrass. Rewind back to a Twitter conversation between McIlroy and former “friend” Lee Westwood from January 2011:
I’m sure Rory has the jet fired up and ready to take him back to West Palm Beach, where I believe his parents are this week.
Woods tees off at 1:49, and following his frustrating first-round 74, he needs a decent round to avoid missing the ninth cut of his career, but more notably, the second consecutive one of his storied career. That’s insane. Well, actually it’s not, which is also insane in another way. I can actually believe I typed those words and I’m not incredibly surprised if he has another crappy round. It almost seems like he won’t mind, anyway, since he doesn’t have the best track record here, anyway. Yes, I realize he won in 2001. Remember ’99-’02 Tiger Woods? Yeah, a different time.
Do you think Woods will pull it together and make the cut this afternoon? Perhaps he’ll even go low. What’s the over/under on his score today? Discuss.
Currently, Zach Johnson is the leader in the clubhouse after firing a six-under 66 for a 36-hole total of eight-under.

It’s another Mickey Mouse Dye setup that most pros rightfully sneer at off the record, if not on it. Shame the best field in golf has to be subjected to one of its worst courses.
Guess Rory was bang on in skipping last year. The course does not appear to like his game.
He just hit a great first shot on four, but he has to really get moving. (Oops, did I contribute to your Tiger comments?)
@jason nails it … Dye courses are a total joke and the leaderboard confirms it. Move the tees up and add a couple windmills on the greens and it would be just like an adult mini-golf course. The island green would have Donald Ross rolling over in his grave.
Is this part of Rory’s plan to avoid burnout?
