If for some reason you haven’t read this week’s SI Golf Group’s PGA Tour Confidential, do it now. We kicked around Luke Donald’s come-from-behind victory at the Disney, which also won him the PGA Tour money title and made him the frontrunner in the Player of the Year race.
Other topics include: *Who needs a major the most? Lee Westwood, Luke Donald, Steve Stricker or Dustin Johnson? Methinks Westy.
*Sergio kicked butt at his home course to post 27-under and win the Castellan Masters by 11 shots — it was his home course, so they’re the only greens he knows how to read! Still, very impressive victory. Could this trigger a major Sergio rejuvenation in 2012?
*Geoff Ogilvy, one of the most eloquent players in the game, criticized the way that Fred Couples went about picking Tiger Woods. Was Ogilvy on the mark or out of line? Um, on the money. Meanwhile, Greg Norman’s? — that’s another story.
*Yani captures her 7th LPGA victory and dominated by a five-shot margin, no less. Waiting for the next Tiger? She’s arrived…about six months ago. Will she dominate again in 2012? (Yes, duh!) Who will be her biggest rival? (Lexi Thompson, duh!)
*What will you remember most from 2011?
Hanger: McIlroy’s first major win.
Gorant: Got to be Rory at Congressional.
Herre: The first two majors. The way several players blew TW’s doors off on the back nine at Augusta had a distinct the-king-is-dead feel to it, and McIlroy’s win at the Open was the most overall impressive win of the year.
Shipnuck: I think 2011 will be remembered for the arrival of two transcendent talents, Rory and Lexi, and for the dominance of two players who should have fairly long runs at the top, Luke and Yani.
Lipsey: Tseng dominating, Woods being the captain’s pick and the chatter about that pick.
Godich: I’ll remember the quartet of remarkable majors: Schwartzel’s four-birdie finish at Augusta; Rory’s romp at Congressional; Clarke’s tear-jerking surprise at the British; and Bradley’s back-from-the-dead rally at the PGA in his first start in a major.
Ritter: Tiger’s failure to end his winless streak. For a couple of hours on Sunday at the Masters, Woods charged and many of us thought, “Is he back? Is this it?” Then Woods stalled, and his comeback never materialized the rest of the season.
Morfit: I’ll remember Rory at Congressional, and the fact that Donald, Simpson and Bill Haas each made more than $9 million between the PGA, the Euro tour and the FedEx Cup. That is baseball money.
Wei: Rory blowing it at the Masters and his rebound to dominate at the U.S. Open, which arguably triggered the start of the Wozzilroy era.
Van Sickle: The start of the Webb Simpson Era.
Oh, and I almost forgot — the belly putter trend, too! And so many more ridiculous/amazing memories. Don’t worry, I’ll share soon.

The thing I will remember most about the 2011 season is Tiger Woods finishing at #128 on the money list and losing his card. Seeing him on the Nationwide Tour next year will be funny.
Um Dixon I really hope you’re joking. Tiger has lifetime membership on the PGA tour.
damn…someone has the same name as me…Dixon is so unique that I’ll be mistaken for the above Tiger comments…LOL
personally, don’t care about Tiger…the emergence of Luke Donald, who wins and plays well week in and week out. that to me is worthy golf to watch
tired of GC hyping up the next great player and they fade away….consistency is what made Tiger and VJ so magical to watch
Keegan Bradley is the only PGA Tour member who has something that every other member would gladly give up the money title for – a major.
Luke Donald Disease is still entrenched until an Englishman (Donald, Westwood, Poulter) wins a major regardless of how many zillions they pocket.
@Marky Mark Charl is a pga tour member, and has a green jacket last time I checked.
Winning a major is the greatest accomplishment of the year, but over the course of the year on the pga tour Donald has been the best player.

Thus begs the question. Whose year would you rather have?
- Luke Donald
- Webb Simpson
- Rory McIlroy
- Keegan Bradley
It’s a toss up between Luke and Keegan. Seems like Keegan is getting no respect for his major, I’ll go with Keegan.
I think Simpson’s the real deal. Could win POY next year.
@KC – Rory won the US Open, then ditched his hometown girl for Woznacki. Game/set/match for Rors
“Whose year would you rather have” and “Who had the best year” are different questions. There are plenty of players who (hypothetically speaking) would prefer (1) a season in which they won a single major but had no other top-10 finishes for the rest of the year over (2) a season with multiple non-major wins, but that doesn’t mean the former is more deserving of Player of the Year status than the latter.
I think Yani Tseng will have another stellar season next year (duh) but I think it will take Lexi Thompson a bit longer to become her chief rival. She has a ton of talent and a good support system. Adjusting to life on tour takes time. Yani won one event each her first two years as a member of the LPGA. Lexi needs to develop some more consistency in her game to contend week in and week out. Before her victory in Alabama her best finish this year was a T19. I’m not saying she will be awful. I’m saying that it is a big jump from one LPGA win to Yani Tseng’s chief rival in one year. I think it will take her a little longer.
Even truly great players (which Yani is) rarely have career years more than once. Annika had 2005 once, Tiger had 2000 once. So I doubt Yani will repeat this year in 2012, but she’ll still be the best.
@ Shoshana – yet, if asked, I am sure Schwartzel would give up a money title to win a major as well. The fact that he won a major doesn’t exclude him from the hypothetical question – it all golfers are truthful, a major is always preferable to a money title in any year.
Unfortunately Luke Donald picked the wrong sport, because in gold, there are only four tournaments that count. They are the only ones that are remembered over decades. Donald is already 33 years old and his window is statistically beginning to close. It is possible to win majors later, but despite Darren Clarke, Vijay Singh, and a few others, they are rare events.
If you don’t win a major, in golf you should not be player of the year. Tough beans.
Bill Haas for “whose year would you rather have?” FedEx champ and 14mil in the bank. Many more chances for the elusive major to follow. 4 majors a year but only one $10 mil bonus.
6+ on PGA Tour, another 6 or so on Euro Tour, 2 mill bonus for FedUp Cup and 7 figure bonus from Polo, new baby on way == LUUUKE’s year in a landslide. . .
@IC – a single major is worth more than $10 million in additional endorsement money (thats a minimum for the least charismatic winners), plus the winners cheque, plus having a major to one’s name. The big difference is that one is a major champ and the other is a Fed Ex chump.
Anyone would rather have the year of one of the four major winners as opposed to Bill Haas’ year.
Well, I normally agree with Marky, that POY needs to win a major. But this year, I can’t pick the major winners as PGA player of the year. Clarke, of course, not. Rory and Charl = awesome majors, but only won the once on the PGA tour, and weren’t exactly all consistently on leaderboards in the US all year long. So, that leaves Keegan.
So can the other multi-winners take over Keegan? I say yes to both Luke and Webb, because they won multiple times, and big tournaments, AND were basically in contention all year long every time out.
Then with Luke getting money title, that pushes him past Webb for me.
