And the winner for the 2010 PGA Tour Darwin Award goes to Matt Every. The dregs and drunks of the Quad Cities welcomed Every to the Scott County Jail on Tuesday, two days before he teed off for the John Deere Classic, after he was charged for possession of controlled substance (marijuana) at the Island Casino Hotel Bettendorf. Gasp — pro golfers smoke weed!
At 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation agents were called to the hallway outside a room in the Isle Casino Hotel Bettendorf’s north tower because of a strong odor of marijuana, the affidavit states.
Authorities knocked on the door, and the marijuana odor intensified when an occupant opened the door.
One person admitted providing the marijuana and three of the four room occupants admitted to smoking it, the affidavit states.
Every was arrested and booked into the Scott County Jail. He was released Tuesday evening after posting bond.
Also charged with drug possession are Derek Mason, 28, of Naperville, Ill., and William Hicks, 49, of Mebane, N.C. They also were released after posting bond.
I’m not going to sit here and type moral to Every on the dangers (ha!) of marijuana smoking. (After all, it’s legal in some states and it’s arguable alcohol is a worse evil.) But I will say this: WAY TO GET CAUGHT, YOU MORON!
In the PGA Tour’s drug testing policy, it does test for marijuana, but the Tour uses its discretion in regards to punishment and does not publicize players that test positive for recreational drugs. $1,000 bucks says if you were to break into Ponte Vedra Beach HQ and check out the files, there would be at least a handful of players who tested positive for pot on the PGA. And then there’s the Nationwide Tour…this is all speculation and in jest, of course. I’m just saying it’s not exactly earth-shattering news that some pro golfers smoke weed.
Anyway, Every has denied possession of ganja, and in a statement released by his management firm he apologized for showing poor judgment. After his first round at the John Deere Classic, he’s denied comment. Every made the cut this week and through three rounds he’s T72. Way to go. (I’m only being 30% sarcastic.)
If I’m Every, I’m more worried about facing the wrath of Tour commish Tim Finchem and his flaks than I am about fighting the police charges.

“MMMMM Drugs are bad mmkay”.
Funny story. I saw this and had to laugh. Of course there are golfers that smoke weed, just like there are segments of every occupation that smoke weed or worse. Poor judgement is a good answer. As for my opinion…I would agree with the argument that alcohol does more damage…(and no I don’t smoke). But seriously…when’s the last time you heard that someone got stoned and beat up there wife….
Well, this one time my wife ate all the Cheese Doodles, so …
He didnt inhale, but he sure ate a lot of brownies
Apropos to this story… ask for an apple at St. Andrews. The reaction might be funny.

Golf and cannabis are a great combination. Not all the time, but every so often when the course is rather empty, as evening is falling, you take a little toke and then suddenly the tranquillity and bucolic pleasures of the golf course, the wind and the trees, the grass, the native flora and fauna… all come into even clearer focus, and the joy and privilege of playing golf become even more pronounced. Ahhh.
