As you may have noticed, Fred Couples has lost weight lately and there’s been some chatter about it around Sahalee. Those who have known him for years, like Gordy Graybeal, the director of the First Tee, said he’s never seen Freddie look so fit and healthy. Has Freddie been working out? What’s the secret behind his slimmer, more strapping look?
From his press conference on Wednesday:
Well, I’ve been dating a girl for about four months and she works out in the morning and the afternoon and night, it seems like. She works out a couple of times a day. And I go to the gym with her and she does her thing, and I just walk on the treadmill and she gives me a couple of other things to do.
But she’s very athletic, and I’ve lost some weight walking. I’m not doing anything — I have a back guy that’s wanted me to lose some weight, but my back actually feels worse today than it did three months ago when I started walking a lot. But I’m not doing anything, I just get on a treadmill while she’s exercising and doing her program. I just go walk on a treadmill. I have lost some weight. It’s been very good. But my back is very tight.
But this weight thing, I just have lost some weight by moderate exercise, nothing crazy.
The crazy things love can make you do.

I bet if he exercised more than just walking it would help his back as well….
Guy has just always been a lazy underachiever.

I hope this isn’t another situation where someone who is used to having a little body fat loses it while getting fit and ends up getting injured because they don’t have their usual cushion.

@courtgolf: You are describing the David Duval effect, I assume.

lol – Duval is defintely on that list. So is John McEnroe, Mickey Lolich, and Carl Pettersson.

Nicklaus did the same thing, in the late 70s, I think. Lost too much weight and discovered he couldn’t play golf anymore. So he put it back on!

I am really glad Fred has lost weight. It’s unfortunate that Freddie has been misleading in how he lost weight. Walking on a treadmill will not lead to weight loss.
Walking on a treadmill raises the heart rate to 90 or so(I’m not quite sure of the unit). 170 on a heart monitor would be a stair stepper flat out as fast as you can. !0 minutes of this will drench your clothes in sweat. I’ve seen 60 year old women do 160 on a stair stepper for 30 minutes. That level of intensity for that long will burn 300-400 calories, equivalent to a cup full of food.
I would be willing to bet that Freddie’s athletic girlfriend had a superior food plan or at least was more skilled in the nuances of nutrition.

It could be that my man, Freddy, might have more than walking going for him. His new, young girlfriend is probably working Fred in the rack, too. Depending on positions used, that might explain how his back gets stiff.
I know, i know, crude, base, vulgar, but likely to be true.
Forgive me, Steph!

Congratulations Johnirby, for courageously posting what many of us were thinking. Although an alternative theory is that gf has him actually joining her in strenuous Yoga or Spin classes and he is too much of a Manly Man to admit it. Steph, I think you should sleuth out an employee of his La Quinta gym and get the “real” story.

When I saw Freddie at the Break 100 Challenge at the US Open at Torrey Pines, he had some hot, thai-asian girl walking by his side the whole time. I spent a good amount of time checking her out. Since Freddie was my favorite golfer growing up, it was an easy choice.
This new girl is probably just as smokin.
