Tiger vs. Sergio: Saturday afternoon’s alright for fighting?

Boom, baby!

Boom, baby!

Well, this is shaping up to be a great Players Championship (take that, Vijay!), with Sergio Garcia leading and Tiger Woods right behind him. Garcia, who won here in 2008, had a sizzling second nine (teed off no. 10), rolling in five birdies in a row at one point and matching his career low at TPC Sawgrass with a seven-under 65.

Sergio actually played better on his first nine, but he just didn’t score. Imagine if he had!  (continue reading…)

John Daly to Vijay: Don’t do it!

Screen Shot 2013-05-10 at 11.19.14 AM

John Daly has some words of wisdom for Vijay Singh, who filed a lawsuit against the PGA Tour on Wednesday. Daly tweeted, “VJ don’t do this horrible advice you got off take it from me not worth it #friendlyadvice.”

Daly would know. In 2007 the two-time major champion filed a lawsuit against a number of parties, including the PGA Tour. That didn’t end so well. (continue reading…)

Late notes Thursday at THE PLAYERS: Tiger starts strong with 67, Vijay sprays a few shots

Tiger Woods Y'all!

Tiger Woods Y’all!

While conditions firmed up and a mild breeze blew through TPC Sawgrass, there were still plenty of low scores in the afternoon wave of The Players Championship, but no one came close to touching Roberto Castro’s nine-under 63 — his lead of three remains safe heading into Friday.

Tiger Woods, who hasn’t traditionally fared well consistently here, opened with a solid five-under 67. With the exception of a fatted chip on the 18th that led to a bogey, Woods’ scrambling was exceptional and he only needed 24 putts. He missed in favorable spots that resulted in good up-and-downs, but strangely, he didn’t make a putt over six feet (because those darn greens were so crusty!). (continue reading…)

Early notes Thursday at THE PLAYERS: Castro fires red-hot 63, McIlroy posts best-ever at TPC Sawgrass

A couple of major champions

A couple of major champions

When Adam Scott stepped up to the tee on Thursday morning at The Players Championship, the starter didn’t announce him as the Masters Champion. “It was the biggest disappointment of the day,” said a smiling Scott, who shot a respectable three-under 69 in his first round since winning the green jacket last month.

Rory McIlroy, who played with Scott and Steve Stricker, poked fun at his past record at TPC Sawgrass, saying he’d be announced as “coming off three missed cuts at The Players.” McIlroy has set himself up well to break that streak.  (continue reading…)

Player reaction to Vijay Singh v. PGA Tour

Singh sues

Singh admitted he used deer antler spray and it’s the Tour’s fault?

As expected, TPC Sawgrass was buzzing with the news of Vijay Singh, who filed a lawsuit against the PGA Tour on Wednesday, the day before its flagship event, The Players Championship. It was a surprising turn of events since the Tour had cleared Singh of any wrongdoing last week, and the timing couldn’t have been any better — by better, I mean, worse.

Singh’s complaint purports the Tour’s action resulted in the Hall of Fame golfer to be “humiliated, ashamed, ridiculed, scorned and emotionally distraught.” (You can read the full complaint here.) He also claims the Tour acted unlawfully in the handling of the testing of the deer antler spray that Singh used.  (continue reading…)

Vijay Singh files suit against PGA Tour because it’s their fault he took a banned substance

Oh, this keeps getting better! A week after the PGA Tour let Vijay Singh off the hook for doping charges, the 50-year-old Hall of Fame golfer filed suit against the Tour for damage to his reputation for failure to do a thorough job on researching his deer antler spray use, according to USA Today. PGA Tour lets Vijay Singh off the hook for using deer antler spray

Singh: Oh deer!

Singh: Oh deer!

PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem announced in a press conference at Quail Hollow Golf Club on Tuesday that Vijay Singh would not be suspended for using deer antler spray and the case against Singh has now been dropped.

In a Sports Illustrated article earlier this year, Singh revealed he had taken the substance, which contains IGF-1,a banned substance on the PGA Tour and other major sports leagues as set forth by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Subsequently, he released a statement that expressed his shock and anger, along with his ignorance it was prohibited.

Singh admitted he had used deer antler spray unknowingly, but there wasn’t a positive drug test, so he is in the clear. Basically, while IGF-1 is illegal, it is not a violation unless you test positive — even though there is no way of detecting the substance through blood testing.

Here’s the full statement from the PGA Tour: (continue reading…)

Greg Norman: Golf’s drug testing policy is “disgraceful”

The Shark calls out golf and drugs

The Shark wants stricter drug testing standards in golf

Greg Norman called out golf’s anti-doping procedure and implied the problem in the game goes beyond, say, Vijay Singh using deer-antler spray.

“You only have to look at what happened to Vijay Singh just recently to know the drugs issue is there,” Norman told The Australian on Monday. (continue reading…)

Details from Vijay/Finchem meeting more secretive than a CIA planning session

Oh my goodness: Deer antler spray is a banned substance?!? I plead ignorance.

Oh my goodness: Deer antler spray is a banned substance?!? I plead ignorance.

In light of admitting to using deer antler spray that may contain IGF-1, a banned substance, Vijay Singh and PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem met on Wednesday afternoon at Pebble Beach.

According to GolfChannel.com, a member of Singh’s management team described reviews of the meeting as “mixed,” but wouldn’t elaborate further.  (continue reading…)

AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am pairings and celebs: Harbaugh, Condi, Gretzky & more

Bill Murray wore this two years ago at the event. Seriously.

Bill Murray wore this two years ago at the event. Seriously.

We saw some entertaining antics that veer from golf’s usual decorum at the Waste Management Phoenix Open last week. Well, the “fun” continues at Pebble Beach, where the rich and the famous play with the pros for the “pro-am” portion of the event.

It’s probably just me, but it seems like there are more bold-faced names than usual on this year’s list, which can be found here — though I have an updated version below, with additional entries, like Jim Harbaugh (the brother who was on the losing side of the Har-Bowl Super Bowl) and Condoleezza Rice. Also, I’ve noted their pro partner in parenthesis.
