The saga that will not die: Tiger didn’t really lie, he was just confused

Tiger and Sergio: Not even frenemies, just enemies

Tiger and Sergio: Not even frenemies, just enemies

Honestly, I’m over this whole controversy. Which one? Oh, The Incident on the second hole in the third round of The Players Championship, where Sergio accused Tiger of purposely causing a disturbance. I mean, really! Well, I guess there’s a part of me that finds it comically intriguing. So, what’s the latest twist is this never-ending episode of the Real Housewives of the PGA Tour?

Contrary to the Sports Illustrated report on Monday that quoted two marshals saying they never spoke with Tiger or told him Sergio had already hit. Turns out a volunteer did talk to Tiger, but only after he had already pulled the 5-wood, which caused the crowd to react noisily and distract Sergio, according to The Jacksonville Times-Union‘s Garry Smits(continue reading…)

Players Champ marshals: We never talked to Tiger

Tiger’s shot on the second hole in the third round

Just when you thought this season of the Real Housewives of the PGA Tour, starring Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia, was over, there’s another twist. Nice work by SI’s Michael Bamberger, who tracked down the marshals working the second hole at TPC Sawgrass during the Players Championship, including Saturday when The Incident occurred. You know, the ones that supposedly told Tiger that Sergio had already hit, which led him to pull a club, resulting in the crowd to react and then distracting Sergio. (continue reading…)

Tiger Woods wins fourth of the season at The Players

Tiger Woods y'all

Tiger Woods y’all

What a hell of a tournament! — whether it was Sergio Garcia and Tiger Woods throwing handbags at each other or dunking balls in water hazards at crucial points on Sunday or someone missing and making a game-changing putt, there was no shortage of drama at TPC Sawgrass.

In the end, Woods captured his 78th PGA Tour victory, only four shy of Sam Snead’s all-time record of 82, and his second Players Championship title, not to mention his fourth win of the year, marking the earliest he’s achieved that feat in any season.  (continue reading…)

SergH2O dunks three balls in the drink late to sink his shot at second Players title

Oh no!

Oh no!

Heading into the famed 17th hole, Sergio Garcia had just tied his nemesis Tiger Woods by rolling in a birdie on the 16th. Garcia could feel the adrenaline running through him. He was striping the ball. He thought he might overshoot the green from 120 yards. Instead, his tee shot came up short and into the drink.

He re-teed and hit his wedge again. This time it reached land, but it wasn’t enough and bounced back into the pond. Ouch.  (continue reading…)

Sergio on Tiger: “He’s not the nicest guy on Tour.”

Catfight!

Catfight!

Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia were not paired together for the final round of The Players Championship, which was a blessing for everyone involved — and Sergio made that clear following the completion of the third round on Sunday morning.

Tiger and Sergio: The Real Housewives of the PGA Tour

Can you feel the hate? Yep.

Can you feel the hate? Yep.

Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia, who have some history, have provided the most drama of the week — or hell, for that matter, the year — in the third round of The Players Championship. (Un)fortunately, it was more through their words than their games, though.

Sergio being Sergio and very honest — which I’ve learned to find endearing —  started it, otherwise known as The Incident — (I mean, if we’re going to be juvenile, might as well go with it…), and then, Tiger let it get to him, obviously, and snapped back an equally catty remark.  (continue reading…)

Gamesmanship or just bad timing?

Oh, Sergio!

For better or worse, Sergio Garcia just can’t help himself. Only he could create drama on national television during the weather delay on Saturday at The Players Championship.

His not-so-friendly rivalry with Tiger Woods is well documented (i.e. Tiger’s text to a friend after throttling Sergio at the ’06 Open Championship: “I just bludgeoned Tweety Bird…”).

On the par-5 no. 2 at TPC Sawgrass, Tiger hooked his drive into the trees. Meanwhile, Sergio striped a beautiful shot to the middle of the fairway. As Sergio was about to hit his second shot, Tiger pulled a wood and the crowd reacted excitedly and noisily to see he was going for the green. (Because OMG, TIGER IS HITTING A WOOD!) (continue reading…)

Tiger vs. Sergio (or Sergio vs. Tiger) at The Players third round open thread

It’s about time. Sergio Garcia and Tiger Woods, who are first and second, respectively, at The Players Championship are *finally* about to tee off (2:40pm). This should be interesting. You could say they have some history.

In the 19 rounds they’ve been paired together, Tiger has Sergio’s number (12-3-4, win-loss-tie). Who do you think will post a lower score today? Predictions? — they don’t just have to be scores, I’m open to creative ones, too. Actually, please entertain me.  (continue reading…)
