Glory beckons: a guide to Lytham’s home straight

Looks easy, right?

The Guardian has assembled an interactive guide to the five holes comprising arguably the most difficult closing stretch on the Open Championship rota.

Well worth your attention, it pairs snazzy graphics with the insight of several illustrious (and not so illustrious) competitors, Graeme McDowell, Steve Stricker and Jim Furyk among them.

2012 RBC Heritage open thread: Sundresses, yachts and koozies

View of the famed lighthouse at Harbour Town Golf Links on Saturday

Per popular request — meaning, like, two people — I’m tossing up an open thread/dartboard, where you can all vent about your grimaces and praises with The Heritage. My main ones? Well, the beautiful views (which is up for several interpretations! LOLZ!).

Anyway, some points of interest, including several highlights and sightings last night at the harbor and “Quarterdeck.” (continue reading…)

Oh, the Huh-Sanity!

Johnny Question Mark

Congrats to Q-school grad John Huh on capturing his first PGA Tour victory in his fifth career start at the Mayakoba Golf Classic. The 21-year-old fired an impressive bogey-free 63 on Sunday to force a playoff against Robert Allenby (who doubled the 18th hole in regulation). Eight extra holes later, the rookie won with a par.

What a Huhnderella story! (*groan*) — be sure to check out Jill Painter’s article on John’s inspiring journey to the Tour.

When Aussies Attack…

Allenby (d-)bags an award, after all...

Presidents Cup teammates Robert Allenby and Geoff Ogilvy nearly came to blows, exchanging heated words at the after-party for the Australian PGA on Sunday, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. Several accounts from witnesses claimed Allenby approached Ogilvy and offered to settle the dispute physically and at least one glass broke before Allenby walked away. (continue reading…)

Chalmers Wins Again, Chomping at the Bit for Aussie Triple Crown (If He Plays the Masters)

Decisions, decisions: Triple crown bid or family time?

I’m afraid I didn’t spend Saturday night watching the Australian PGA, but it certainly sounded like an exciting final round, ending with a three-way playoff. South Korean KT Kim, who basically had his “Hello, world” moment at the Presidents Cup a week earlier, held the 54-hole lead, while American Bubba Watson trailed by just a shot. Both blew it on Sunday.

Meanwhile, three Australians, Greg Chalmers, who won the Australian Open two weeks prior, Robert Allenby, who went 0-5 at Royal Melbourne, and Marcus Fraser, seized the opportunity with a dramatic finish in regulation that led to a ho-hum playoff – at least that’s what I gathered from Peter Stone of the Sydney Morning Herald: (continue reading…)

Are the Americans at a Severe Disadvantage in Aussie Territory?

The International Team is stacked with five Aussies, giving them a clear advantage Royal Melbourne

Fred Couples possesses an outstanding golfing resume, but he’s in denial if he believes local knowledge is not just an advantage, but a necessity at Royal Melbourne. (continue reading…)

Aussie Open Recap: Tiger Plays Well. So Does Everyone Else.

Tiger: mauve-ing up in the world.

A bogey-free round from Tiger Woods, fine play from nearly all the American invitees and an albatross from the home favourite: ’twas a fine day at The Lakes. (continue reading…)

Your Australian Open/Another Tiger Comeback First-Round Open Thread

Tiger + Australia = Love affair...oh, wait, except when the National Enquirer followed him to Melbourne

Tiger Woods, along with Jason Day, Australia’s highest-ranked player, and Robert Allenby, have kicked off their opening round of the Australian Open at The Lakes.

Just for fun, let’s make some predictions. Who will go low in the three-ball (Tiger/Day/Allenby)? I take Jason. And what will Tiger shoot? I’ll go with even par. Maybe that’s a tad too generous since conditions have toughened with the wind gusting rather healthily this afternoon in Sydney. (continue reading…)

Presidents Cup Standings Set, Couples Speaks

MJ will assist Freddie at the Presidents Cup for the second straight time

Some players gained and lost more than others at the BMW Championship — there was more on the line than a paycheck and finishing in the top 30 in FedExCup points to advance to the Tour Championship, not to mention for many players, the advantage of planning their schedule since they earn berths in the WGC-Cadillac Championship, the Masters, the U.S. Open, the British Open and all the Tour’s Invitationals (i.e,. Bay Hill, Memorial, etc.).

With the BMW as the last event for players to qualify for this November’s Presidents Cup, the U.S. team is set, except for the final captain’s pick since Captain Fred Couples prematurely announced Tiger Woods as his first. (continue reading…)

Weather Could Make a Swirl of Difference

Riviera in the rain

Practically right on cue, here comes the rain! The forecast called for rain starting at 3pm local time. Ryan Moore, who fired a three-under 68 to shoot his way into contention, expressed relief that he was safely in the clubhouse. Meanwhile, Corey Pavin, who shot an even-par 71, walked off the course with a big smile on his face early this afternoon for a good reason — he too finished before the weather blew in (and he ranks near last in driving distance). Now, it’s cold, windy and pouring, which doesn’t bode well for the players still on the course, especially the shorter hitters.
