It’s about time. Sergio Garcia and Tiger Woods, who are first and second, respectively, at The Players Championship are *finally* about to tee off (2:40pm). This should be interesting. You could say they have some history.

There was an especially excited feeling in the air at the Memorial Tournament early Friday evening — the kind that only one player can stir up. Tiger Woods, of course. He birdied three of his first six holes to jump atop the ‘board with the leaders in the clubhouse, Spencer Levin and Scott Stallings. Spencer Levin is usually seen smoking darts like it’s his job, but this week at TPC Scottsdale, he’s also hitting darts. The fiery Levin teed off in the final round of the Phoenix Open with a six-shot lead through 54 holes.

Spence has got this in the bag, right? Well, if we learned anything last week at the Farmers Insurance Open, NO lead is safe. Not even a seven-shot advantage with 11 holes to play. The tournament is 72 holes, not 71, etc. (continue reading…)

Hello from Atlanta Athletic Club! It was beautiful this morning when Tiger Woods started on the 10th hole to kick off Glory’s Last Shot (the most overused phrase…ever). Too bad it won’t stay that way. Temperatures are expected to rise to the mid-90s again.

Well, I don’t remember the last time I was this pumped up over a final-round leaderboard. It has the makings for an exciting finish, especially coming down to that great closing stretch of holes. It's hot in Dublin...Ohio, that is.

Steve Stricker is off to another hot start on another sticky day at Muirfield Village, posting two consecutive birdies on Nos 1 and 2. Going into the final round of the Memorial, Stricker held a three-shot lead over Jonathan Byrd. The two played in the last group together on Sunday at the first tournament of the year, the Hyundai Tournament of Champions at Kapalua. Stricker didn’t have his best day and Byrd ended up carrying the day after winning a playoff against Robert Garrigus.

Rickie Fowler made the most of the tranquil conditions on Thursday morning, posting two birdies and an eagle on his first nine (the back). As the winds picked up, Fowler faltered with a bogey-bogey finish, but he still shot a three-under 69 for a share of the clubhouse lead.

Hunter Mahan came in shortly after and matched Fowler’s score. Mahan was pleased with his ballstriking, particularly his irons. The only mistakes that stood out to him were three-putting No. 3 and No. 15.

There are so many intoxicating storylines this weekend and the only one that remotely involves the FedEx Cup is whether Tiger Woods would secure enough points to advance for the second round at next week’s Deutsche Bank Championship. Good news! — he needed to finish somewhere between 50th and 57th at The Barclays, and he delivered by posting a 67 in the final round. With the leaders still on the course, Tiger is currently in the clubhouse for a share of eighth place.

Martin Laird is trying to capture his second career PGA Tour victory. He’s leading at 12-under through 6 holes — after a hot start with back-to-back birdies, he doubled the par-5 third and bogeyed the par-4 fourth. Kevin Streelman, Matt Kuchar and Jason Day are two strokes behind at 10-under with lots of golf left to play.

Meanwhile, Dustin Johnson is trying to bounce back from two major championship disappointments. Not that I wish such misfortune on anyone, but I’m almost glad it happened to someone as…umm…resilient as DJ. He’s even-par through six holes and nine-under for the tournament. Get moving, DJ!

And as you know, Monty made his captain’s picks. Luke Donald just finished with a solid 40 on the back nine to post a decent 68. I’m going to go listen to him talk. Drop your comments below.
