There was a rather perplexing (and somewhat alarming) situation over Justin Leonard’s 2012 exempt status Friday afternoon. After Leonard shot a blazing nine-under 63 to take a share of the lead at the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic, his eligibility for the following year came into question during his press conference. Though a former Open champion and 12-time PGA Tour winner, he’s No. 144 on the 2011 money list and hasn’t won since 2008, so it was unclear to the half-dozen reporters (and Tour media officials) under which category Leonard was exempt. FedExCup Playoffs: A Collection of Competitors and Couch Potatoes
There’s about as many positive things said about the FedExCup as there are about Tiger Woods’ 2011 season. Just after we were forced to come to terms with Woods’ unrecognizable (and mediocre) play, so too did we (re)learn how significant the seemingly arbitrary (though improved) design (earn a chance to win an inordinate, ridiculous and borderline disgusting prize of $10 million) of the FedExCup were last Sunday at the Wyndham Championship.
