U.S. Open third-round pairings and Friday tidbits

View of the 18th green

So, all the work I did in the last two hours was just lost. FML. Somehow it didn’t auto-save and when I hit “publish,” I discovered I had been signed out and my draft hadn’t been saved. Awesome. I don’t think I’ve felt that pit in my stomach since college. I mean, c’mon, technology!

Well, I guess I’ll redo it later, but bed for now. Here are the tee times for Saturday: (continue reading…)

Fred Couples and the Augusta National fountain of youth

Robyn Beck/AFP/Getty Images

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Before the camera clicks on and the light at the top of it comes to life, the co-leader of The Masters has one request: A few more seconds. Please, just a few more seconds. It’s been a long day and a long hour after a five-hour round around these hills and slopes. Having been granted his request, Fred Couples — tucked between a molting pine tree and an empty television interview area — begins to go through his usual pre-everything routine.

First, he groans.

An Inside Look at Tiger’s Win, According to Joe LaCava

"F-yeah!"

Who else has a Bay Hill hangover? I do. Combine that with heavy turbulence in the last 30 minutes of a flight from MCO to EWR, along with the crazy cab ride (if you think NYC cabbies are bad, I suggest an experience with one in Newark. Glad I took an extra barf bag with me!/end rant), and you can imagine how I feel. Well, now that I’ve voiced my god-awful complaints because you all asked, I’ll move on to the actual point. Don’t think I can’t hear those massive violins you’re playing softly in the corner.

While Tiger Woods was presented with the trophy for winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational by a commanding five shots and being fitted for his seventh Blue Jacket on the 18th green at Bay Hill, we cornered his veteran and highly-respected caddie, Joe LaCava, in a media scrum next to the scoring trailer. Finally! Tiger’s Back…in the Winner’s Circle.

I'm back...to winning, suckers!

Wow, I’m still overwhelmed by the chaos, emotions and mind-blowing events of the day. Would you expect anything less, though? Of course not! After all, Tiger Woods won his first PGA Tour event since the sex scandal that led to his rapid fall from grace, which were triggered by his minor car accident in the wee hours the day after Thanksgiving in 2009.

Woods captured his seventh victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and his 72nd on the PGA Tour — he now only needs one more to tie Jack Nicklaus for second in all-time victories. (continue reading…)

Reconciliation Alert: Dustin and Bobby, Together Again

I love you, man!

While I was caught off guard in April when news broke that Dustin Johnson and Bobby Brown had parted ways, I wasn’t shocked to hear DJ has rehired his former longtime caddie, Brown, after splitting seven months ago (hey, every relationship needs breathing space at some point).

In the original report back in April, Dustin described the split as a “break” and that’s exactly what it’s turned out to be. (continue reading…)

Couples Would Have Fired Williams for Tiger Jab

Freddie: Not so fast, Stevie!

While the players in Shanghai took a tepid approach to commenting on Steve Williams’ remark about former boss Tiger Woods — “It was my aim to shove it right up that black arsehole” — it was refreshing to hear U.S. Presidents Cup captain Fred Couples speak out. According to Golf World’s Tim Rosaforte, Couples would sack his caddie for saying such a thing: (continue reading…)

Fred’s Got Tiger’s Back

I got you, man.

Presidents Cup captain Fred Couples watched the fourth or sixth (who can keep track?) comeback of Tiger Woods at the Frys.com Open and then spoke frequently with his former looper of 20-plus years, Joe LaCava, who made his debut on Tiger’s bag last week. Couples, who is playing in this week’s AT&T Championship, the final full-field event of the year on the Champions Tour, talked to the Statesman.com’s Kevin Robbins and defended his decision to use his first captain’s pick on Woods. Tiger Holds Routine Presser at Frys: More Prepared, Healthier, Etc.

Joey's first week with Tiger

After Tiger Woods finished his pro-am at CordeValle for the Frys.com Open on Wednesday afternoon, he spoke to the press. Surprise! — there were no surprises. I’d like to call it the Groundhog Day edition. Tiger says he’s healthier, more prepared than his last starts at WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and the PGA Championship, playing 36-45 holes a day, and refined his swing changes with instructor Sean Foley.

Here are highlights along with some asides: (continue reading…)

Dustin Says He’s OK With Tiger-LaCava Pairing

A short-lived relationship

Dustin Johnson isn’t used to getting dumped, but that’s what happened last Sunday when he finished the final round of the Tour Championship — his caddie Joe LaCava broke up with Johnson for Tiger Woods. Supposedly, DJ was a bit stunned, but as we’ve seen, he shakes things off quite quickly.

By the time he reached Scotland for the Dunhill Links Championship, he said he held no hard feelings against Tiger or Joe and even had a nice chat with Tiger: (continue reading…)

LaCava Links Up With Tiger (*Update)

Joe dumps DJ for Tiger

As if there weren’t enough excitement and surprise in golf on Sunday — while Hunter Mahan and Bill Haas were locked in a duel at the Tour Championship, Butch Harmon revealed on Sky Sports that he had just spoken to his student Dustin Johnson, who told him caddie Joe LaCava decided to leave Johnson for Tiger Woods.
