Behind the Scenes: Waste Management Phoenix Open, Wednesday edition

I know I should know better and use Word instead of WordPress to write my posts, but old habits die hard. The internet timed out and I just lost the last hour’s worth of work–which is always fun–but it’s my own fault. Anyway! It was a busy yet fun (and kind of weird) day on Wednesday at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Above, you can watch the #WUPHangout that I did earlier this evening. What did we talk about? (continue reading…)

Notah and Tiger put the smackdown on the Asian Invasion

Notah and his little bro

Well, no ones cares about the atmosphere on Wednesday at the Deutsche Bank Championship and other interesting tidbits, aka gossip on the range. like the handful of Americans who have one last week to make a case and impress Team USA captain Davis Love III before he announces his four wildcard picks on Tuesday morning… right?

Okay, that’s what I thought, but in case you do, the short version: pretty chill and most relaxed and friendly I’ve seen it in months, with the exception of the half-dozen guys who are freaking out about making the Ryder Cup. (continue reading…)

Steiney Signs Woodland to His Stable

See ya later, Blake...and Randy Smith

As reported Tuesday, Gary Woodland, the incredibly talented basketball-player-turned-golfer, has left Hambric Sports Management to join Mark Steinberg’s small but prestigious group of golfers, including Tiger Woods and Matt Kuchar, at Excel Sports Management. The company also represents an esteemed crop of athletes, like Derek Jeter, Ryan Howard, Blake Griffin and Paul Pierce.

Woodland and Kuchar joined forces and proved to be quite the indomitable team as they won the World Cup last November. That same week Woodland started to consider the management change, according to the AP: (continue reading…)

Five Biggest Overachievers in 2011

Keegan: Yes! I won't be referred to as "Pat Bradley's nephew" anymore!

As the year ends (only a few hours left!), we’re taking a look at the winners and losers of 2011. First, we reviewed the best shots. Then, we cringed through the greatest meltdowns. Now, we — with most of the credit going to Intern Shoshana — check out some players that exceeded the expectations set for them at the start of the season. Before you dig in, consider some of the guys you think distinguished themselves in 2011. (continue reading…)

Kuchar-Woodland Duo Bring the World Cup Back to the U.S.

Dream team USA with their better halves!

The United States captured the World Cup for the first time since 2000 when Tiger Woods and David Duval represented the country. Matt Kuchar and Gary Woodland ended the 11-year dry spell on Sunday, shooting a five-under 67 at Mission Hills to overcome a two-stroke deficit at the start of the day and finish two shots better than Team Germany and Team England.

Kuchar and Woodland, both making their debut at the Omega Mission Hills World Cup, also became the first set of rookies to win since Mark O’Meara and Tiger Woods in 1999. (continue reading…)

Your Open Championship Open Thread: Wet and Wild!

Bad weather isn't stopping fans from coming to the Open

As expected, high winds and heavy rain have battered Royal St. George’s, along with fans, players and the several members of the media. Not surprisingly, the few players who have finished shot over par.

Gary Woodland was off to a fantastic start, but conditions worsened as his round progressed. Woodland was playing some mighty impressive golf until he reached the 14th, where the cross wind was so strong that he aimed roughly 50 yards left of the fairway, but a bad swing put him out of bounds. (continue reading…)

“Teen Phenoms, They Grow Up So Fast”

It seems like just the other day he was 16!

In case you missed it, here are some nuggets from Tuesday and Wednesday’s practice rounds via my Golf.com post. First, Matteo Manassero returns to play in the Open Championship, but now he’s all grown up: (continue reading…)

Woodland, Adamonis Complete 156-Player Field at US Open

Woodland ranked No. 40 in OWGR

On Monday morning the USGA announced that Gary Woodland and Brand Adamonis were added to the field at the US Open at Congressional. After placing sixth at the Memorial Tournament two weeks ago, Woodland moved within the top-50 in the world rankings. (continue reading…)

Tiger Could Be a Distance Third for First Two Rounds

This week’s “featured group” at the Arnold Palmer Bay Hill Invitational arguably spotlights the three most athletic golfers on the PGA Tour — Tiger Woods, Dustin Johnson and the Tour’s most recent first-time champion, Gary Woodland, who won last week’s Transitions Championship. The long-hitting threesome will tee off No. 1 at 12:56pm on Thursday and No. 10 at 8:26am on Friday.

Interestingly enough, Tiger could be the first to hit his second shot on every hole. No joke. Well, unless Woodland pulls out 2-iron off the tee as he’s often done this year, like on No. 18 at Innisbrook last Sunday. Even then, if Tiger hits 3-wood, we might have to check ShotLink for confirmation on whether Tiger or Gary is away.

This Week’s PGA Tour Confidential: Does Sergio Have the Drive to Become a Top Player Again?

Anything that has to do with Sergio Garcia usually creates a healthy discussion. We saw glimpses of the “old” Sergio with his solid play in the first two rounds of last week’s Transitions Championship, but then he faltered over the weekend to finish T15. This week’s PGA Tour Confidential host, Mike Walker, posed the question, “Have we already seen the best we’re going to get from Sergio, or does he have the drive to become a top player again?” Here’s an excerpt from our lively chat:
