No joke about the pressure and stress for some players at Disney...

A friend called me on Friday evening and asked if I saw what had happened with Charlie Beljan, who was visibly having difficulty breathing and staying upright as he finished his round.

No, I wasn’t, and I didn’t have access to a TV, but I’d seen a few tweets from concerned and worried players, describing what they were seeing in the second round of the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic as “scary” and “distressing.”

Well, what happened?

Hello, friends! My apologies for the long respite from WUP — I can’t even remember if I put up a post to give you guys a heads up that I’d be away for a few weeks. If you follow me on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram, then you know I was in Thailand to attend a relative’s wedding in Chiang Mai, which was extended into a family vacation.

Sh*t happens

In the last few months of his rookie season, Bobby Gates caught a streak of bad luck and it seemed like everything that could go wrong, did. Fortunately, his luck changed just in time for PGA Tour Q-school finals, where he came back from a disappointing fifth round one-over 73 to shoot six-under 66 in the sixth to climb to a tie for third at PGA West on Monday and retained full status for the 2012 season.

Best of all, Gates doesn’t have to deal with being that guy — you know, the one who was $1,431 short of finishing in the top 125 on the money list to avoid the dreaded return to Q-school.

Dude, who are you voting for Player of the Year?

Congrats, Luke, for winning at Disney and the money title! Oh, wait. Sorry, Luke, the PGA Tour season isn’t actually over yet. Even though you were told it was and you put on a ridiculously clutch performance on Sunday to gain an edge in the Player of the Year race, there’s actually another tournament left: The HSBC Champions, a World Golf Championship event, in Shanghai, China, next week, which counts as an official PGA Tour event if a Tour player wins it.

Luuuuuke: FTW!

If for some reason you haven’t read this week’s SI Golf Group’s PGA Tour Confidential, do it now. We kicked around Luke Donald’s come-from-behind victory at the Disney, which also won him the PGA Tour money title and made him the frontrunner in the Player of the Year race.

Luke's amateur foursomes partner was named Robert Duck, so they were called Donald Duck!

While I was playing Cabot Links in Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, (which is unfinished but has been dubbed “the Bandon of the East), I checked the leaderboard for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic. Luke Donald and Webb Simpson had only played about four holes, and Luke was still about T15, trailing Kevin Chappell by roughly five shots. I didn’t look at my phone again until the 12th hole and did a double take when I saw Luke tied for the lead.

Mystery solved!

There was a rather perplexing (and somewhat alarming) situation over Justin Leonard’s 2012 exempt status Friday afternoon. After Leonard shot a blazing nine-under 63 to take a share of the lead at the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic, his eligibility for the following year came into question during his press conference. Though a former Open champion and 12-time PGA Tour winner, he’s No. 144 on the 2011 money list and hasn’t won since 2008, so it was unclear to the half-dozen reporters (and Tour media officials) under which category Leonard was exempt.

Last week's scoreboard...now it's actually the last week to make a move

This week in golf brings out pressure for the opposite ends of the spectrum depending on what kind of year you’ve had, but money is the common thread. The four major champions are reaping one of the many benefits attached to their title and playing in the 2011 PGA Grand Slam of Golf in Bermuda — a money grab and made-for-TV event. Luke Donald and Webb Simpson will battle it out for the Tour money title, which will probably also decide Player of the Year. Meanwhile, there are a bunch of guys fighting for their cards or just some sort of status for next year (along with trying to pay off their mortgage).

Keeping the eye on the money (and not a points system no one understands)

Webb Simpson missed a short putt to lose in a playoff against Ben Crane on Sunday at The McGladrey Classic, but he did earn a nice consolation prize — $432,000 for his second-place finish to overtake Luke Donald as No. 1 on the PGA Tour money list by $363,029.

Disney should be a doozy!

After firing a three-under 67 to put him in a tie for second at the midway mark of The McGladrey Classic, Webb Simpson confirmed he’ll play next week’s season-ending event, the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic.  Simpson’s announcement followed shortly after world No. 1 Luke Donal committed to the Disney to take on Webb for the PGA Tour Money Title. Oh yeah, it’s on! — both guys are ready to throw down.
