Who else has a Bay Hill hangover? I do. Combine that with heavy turbulence in the last 30 minutes of a flight from MCO to EWR, along with the crazy cab ride (if you think NYC cabbies are bad, I suggest an experience with one in Newark. Glad I took an extra barf bag with me!/end rant), and you can imagine how I feel. Well, now that I’ve voiced my god-awful complaints because you all asked, I’ll move on to the actual point. Don’t think I can’t hear those massive violins you’re playing softly in the corner.

While Tiger Woods was presented with the trophy for winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational by a commanding five shots and being fitted for his seventh Blue Jacket on the 18th green at Bay Hill, we cornered his veteran and highly-respected caddie, Joe LaCava, in a media scrum next to the scoring trailer. Woot!

It’s not even April and we’ve already seen our fair share of drama on Sundays in 2012. While the commotion caused by Tiger Woods’ unexpected withdrawal distracted the focus from the actual golf, the final round of the WGC-Cadillac Championship wasn’t lacking in excitement. In the end, Justin Rose, one of the real good guys out here, won his first World Golf Championship, not to mention his second marquee event in six months, making up a three-shot deficit to Bubba Watson at the start of the day. Driving it 321 yards never felt so bad...

One minute Tiger Woods looked like he was in good spirits, smiling after he had just saved par out of the bunker on No. 11 at the Blue Monster, and the next, he was doubling over in pain after smoking a drive 321 yards down the left-side of 12 fairway and shaking playing partner Webb Simpson’s hand.

Uh-oh, not again.

Bubba likes pink

Bubba Watson is not your conventional PGA Tour player. He has never worked with a swing coach or guru, unless you count his dad, who first introduced him to the game. He has never looked for a sports psychologist to help him with the mental side of the game, which is arguably more crucial than the physical, especially at this elite level. Outside of his caddie Ted Scott and his wife Angie, Bubba has a trainer Andrew Fischer, who travels with him on the road.

Going into Sunday’s final round of the WGC-Cadillac Championship, Watson, who has won three PGA Tour events, admits he still gets nervous. (continue reading…)

59? Eh, I guess not.

Watching Rory McIlroy play the first hole, the easiest at the Blue Monster this week, you might not have thought he would then go on to fire off six birdies on the front nine. He missed his second shot long and left of the green on the reachable par-5 No. 1, leaving himself short-sided to the pin. Then he duffed a chip and wiggled in a six-footer to save par. On the second hole he bombed his drive and hit his approach heavy, but then chipped in for birdie to spark his hot streak in the third round of the WGC-Cadillac Championship.

From there, well, he caught a spark on his way to posting six-under 30 without birdieing both par-5s. Can’t say you were too surprised — after all, he is the world’s No. 1 golfer. (continue reading…)

Bubba Watson battled (if you can even call it that) the TPC Blue Monster and brought it to its knees in the second round of the WGC-Cadillac Championship. Watson, who teed off No. 10, fired off five birdies on his first nine for a five-under 31, and backed it up with another five-under 31 on the front side, including an eagle on the par-5 8th, to post a 10-under 62, matching his career low score on Tour.
