Rumored to have been paid a $200,000 appearance fee, Bubba Watson played in the French Open on the European Tour this week. It was Bubba’s first trip to France, and for some reason, I think it might be his last.
Prior to the first round, he toured several of Paris’ most famous sites, but apparently he wasn’t exactly aware of what he saw. Here’s a gem from his Wednesday pre-tourney presser that might make you cower into the fetal position…
Q. I heard you went to Paris yesterday?
BUBBA WATSON: Yeah, yesterday.Q. Did you like — what did you see?
BUBBA WATSON: I don’t know the names of all the things, the big tower, Eiffel Tower, an arch, whatever that — I rode around in a circle. And then what’s that — it starts with an L, Louvre, something like that. One of those. And then we just went around to different shops, just kind of walked down the streets and went to different shops and just to see if there was anything we wanted to buy. Just kind of looked around and kind of road around and really that’s it, just to see stuff that we don’t get to see normal.
That big tower! It starts with an L! Hasn’t he read — I mean, watched The Da Vinci Code??
And apparently Bubba is very homesick and acting like a prima donna (which isn’t uncommon for him in the States, but they don’t cater to that in Europe). When I read Bernie McGuire’s account of Bubba’s trip (hat tip: Geoff Shackelford), I cringed with second-hand embarrassment:
Also Watson’s been ‘difficult’ all week by declining simple requests for interviews and even an approach from one of SKY’s more attractive female employees to film a head shot of him during the informality of Wednesday’s Pro-Am.
“See my manager,” was his only comment.
Also it’s believed Watson refused to share a courtesy car from his hotel to the course with a European Tour player and instead demanded his own courtesy car.
You don’t do those things in Europe.
And Watson’s also done little to earn the appearance money he’s been reportedly paid.
He’s known to enjoy spending time with young children but has Waston asked to host a clinic for young French golfers? Of course not!
For all you may think about Tiger Woods, at least the former long running World No. 1 happily agreed to bringing smiles to young golfers.
All Watson’s done is tarnish his fun-loving image and drawn comparisons to the ‘ugly American tourist’ that we all thought we saw the back of decades ago.
Oh, it gets better. After Bubba missed the cut, he blamed the poor security for his unenthusiastic showing at his first European Tour event, according to Reuters:
“It’s different for me, there’s cameras, there’s phones, there’s everything, no security,” a visibly disgruntled Watson told reporters. “I don’t know which holes to walk through, there’s no ropes. It’s something I’m not used to, I’m not comfortable with.”
European Tour tournament director David Probyn said the American would have to experience plenty of disturbance on his home tour, but did admit that course security was much more relaxed in Europe.
“You can’t ban everyone who is carrying a mobile phone,” the tour’s senior tournament director said. “It’s the same with cameras. You can’t scan everyone for a camera at every event, that would just make it hard for people to watch golf and we don’t want to do that.
“Sure, we are not as rigorous with the way we run things as they might be in America. But we don’t have 1,200 volunteers like they have in America for a tournament. Anyway, our players are happy to walk through the crowds.”
Bubba will return to Europe sooner than he’d probably prefer to play in the British Open in less than two weeks, but he can’t get out of France quick enough:
Watson said he would now “go sightseeing real quick and get home as fast as possible.” He will play the British Open in two weeks’ time “because it’s a major,” but he would not commit to his entry for the Scandinavian Masters the week after Royal St George’s.
“I think this might be the only one,” said Bubba when asked if he would play more globally going forward. “I miss my home.”

Wow.

wow had no idea, i actually thought he was different
Bubba acting like a prima donna in France is only being viewed as so shocking, because we ignore the fact that he’s a prima donna in the United States, in the rush to promote him as an awesome, fun loving, new Bubba (all of which is also true). Everyone has good and bad sides to them, this is Bubba’s
France is the worst place to visit in the world .. the people are rude and hate Americans … good for Bubba!
This is old news for Bubba Watson. He’s not as fan friendly as some would think. He’s more like a real life version of David SImms. If the cameras aren’t on, he’s a dirtbag. I’ve seen him yell at tournament volunteers, members and staff. He and his caddy direct spectators like cattle, and he barely acknowledges most fans when on the course. I’ve hear stories of his behavior at a US Open sectional qualifier a few years back from a player in his group that I can’t even repeat here. Well done Bubba, way to represent yourself and your country as the stereotypical ignorant, arrogant American on 4th of July weekend.
Bubba’s behaviour is not unique to americans. Have you been in Europe and watched american behaviour – loud, rude , demanding, looking for a McDonald because they hate Euro food.
Since this was Bubba’s first Euro venture, his mgmt co should have prepared him better, also Bubba should have taken responsibilty read up about the Paris attractions so that he does sound like a doofus. I am almost sure his wife clued him in, but like a lot of men, he did not listen to her.Bubba should dump his mgmt co and tell them that playing in Europe is not only about appearance fees.
But we all make mistakes , so he will learn from this and do better next time. Ignorance can be remedied.
Bubba is very unpopular in the locker room, because the players realize that his transformation to media darling over the last 18 months is all just an act. His caddie called him out for being awful, so Bubba now realizes when a camera is around. His friendship with Rickie has done wonders for his image, it is sad that a guy has to learn how to act from a person who is a decade younger.
Cranky Bubba just couldn’t fake it long enough due to being out of his element and probably jet lagged. It is good that he exposed himself once again for being among the biggest jerks on any tour in the world.
He’s never a fan friendly, I’d follow poulter any day than him… I hate his golf and I guess his attitude…what a jerk! He acts up and my gosh he’s only known because of his name, thank Tom hanks for that!
I recently followed Bubba Watson at the Travelers and he didn’t interact with anyone or rarely acknowledged fans. But at first I thought it was because he was concentrating. Guess not. But I still sort of have a soft spot for Bubba…
You mean all that Bubba bible-thumping doesn’t result any humility or kindness? :-\
This is the kind of garbage that keeps me away from here. A whirlwind driving tour of Paris and you expect the guy who is NOT a world traveler…who IS a self-proclaimed country boy…to know everything about Paris ? And “The Da Vinci Code” ?? Seriously ? Did YOU watch it ? The Arch played almost no part in that movie.
“Acting like a prima donna” ? You’re extrapolating that from one post round interview and a bunch of American “journalists” who have as much direct knowledge of the situation as you ? Come on.
No – Bubba is not sophisticated, and he admits it. Attacking him because he was invited and paid to PLAY GOLF…not to be a tour guide or ambassador.
Instead of reading articles that get a chuckle out of his little tourism faux paseseses and maybe encouraging him to learn a little more about the place he is “visiting” (which is an incorrect term since this was a business trip, not a vacation) – we’re stuck with arrogant, nose in the air tabloid pieces that condemn a guy for what he didn’t know.
Prediction – next time Bubba passes on an interview, he’ll be roundly and soundly chastized.
Brilliant.
perhaps if Bubba were to undo that top button and loosen up a bit he may just start getting over himself and being more GOLF friendly – would be nice if he realized that golf is bigger than Bubba, not the other way round…. He has wonderful talent, and can be exciting to watch, let’s hope his management team can help him grow up a bit and then he will earn some respect as well……
@court: it is hilarious that you claim that this is the type of stuff that keeps you away from here…..when posting here. you are on every golf blog and criticize everyone. if it really was that bad you wouldn’t read, right?
Bubba being dismissive of the landmarks just shows he is an ignorant knob, something that we knew already. his criticism of the european tour for their policies is pretty funny. you’d think since the pga tour policies are so great (according to bubba) that he wouldn’t act like a complete jackass over here as well.
Nobody attacked him for going over there to play, we are attacking him for being an idiot as always.
Bubba is arrogant, uneducated, short of calling him stupid as a human being, and now we know all those time with Children in the state side is just a show, never from the heart.
He is a suburb raised stupid American that do not understand the “world” and “Global” concept. Remember, this is typical 90% American behavior. I can’t say I am shocked. But, don’t ask Bubba to be the Ambassador of American golfer any time soon.
He has no respect for others, human or culture or comrades. PGA is full of these crappy people that are spoiled and unappreciative.
Its nice to expose the real player behavior like this. We love KJ Choi! A real human being! We love Roy Mc for his early maturity.
Bubba failed as a human being…
@Robert, Paris is the most beautiful city in the world, compare to the cement and artificial American cities which are mostly broker economically and don’t visit Detroit any time soon as it has been contaminated for hundred of years.
French people are not rude, they just don’t like arrogant American basters. Who does?
As a guest in other city/country, show your courtesy. Don’t behave like a child, especially as an adult. On the public forum, don’t speak like an idiot which is exactly your are doing.
Again.. for all you Tiger haters out their…you just don’t hear these kinda stories about bad behavior and being rude to fans. O.K. Tiger is not gracious to the media who turned on him and enjoy sticking it in now.
Let’s hope we see the same amount of intensity in reporting this story about Bubba.
The PGA Tour has way to much money this is what you get!!
I laugh at this crowd here, including the writer, who mock Bubba…yet they themselves couldn’t tell the difference between a crouton and a crepe. And they think they are worldly, thanks to Hollywood. Yet, they are stunned when the real world is different then the movies.
Bubba isn’t shaming Americans..Americans do it every day.
@Divot, way to make that generalization! I’m pretty sure most of us can tell the difference between a crouton and a crepe. And that several are well-traveled and have been to the place that starts with an L in real life.
Bubba is a tool – has been for years. It’s all abouy bubba all the time. His fake caddy is cut from the same cloth. If there’s something available to promote themselves in a good way that doesn’t take much time their all over it. Once an effort is required no chance. Here is a guy that has pkayed over his head for 18 months and people think he is the next American star. Maybe the next American idiot
[...] Watson went on a “charm offensive” this week at the French Open. After missing the cut by a mile today, he basically did everything [...]
There is no defending this moron.
The Golf Channel wasted airtime on this guy a week ago proclaiming the new and improved Bubba with his wife, caddie, and agent making his case.
What’s next? A Golf Channel production on why this putz deserves a third chance?
Golf is a gentleman’s sport and especially those getting paid for it should act like one.
Well, Contrary to many responders, I am in France often and speak French. I am often in France with educated business people, but many of them do not understand how intertwined France and French culture is with that of the US. France supported the US independence, the US fought in Europe and landed in Normandie to bring down German occupation and stop the Third Reich.
Most people acting like Bubba are ignorant; they see nothing, hear nothing, learn nothing – and the French are proud – the don’t lick anybody’s rear end. They dont need to.
But it would hurt if the golf association would teach US golfers playing in Europe some manners, etiquette, and give them some background on where they are going. Clearly Bubba did not even knoe the Eiffel Tower, L’Letoile, the Champs Elysee, the Louvre, etc – that are visible to even almost blind people, and the pride and joy of both France and the rest of Europe.
I don’t agree with the notion of Bubba being an ‘Ugly American’, I think that ignorant American transcend the society latter top down, and they demonstrate their ignorance in arrogance and bad behavior.
Believe me, this is not only an American treat; the Germans, Dutch, English, Japanese and Chinese are the same way, and then there is the crowd that believes they can behave badly from home, because nobody recognizes them.
The basic fact is that you don’t need bodyguards. All you need is to move about by yourself and mix in with everybody else, and nobody would ever recognize a golfer, or any other person, unless you create a lot of fuzz or your entourage does. So my advice to BUBBA, do your walking by yourself, eat lunch in a street-corner brasserie or have a coffe somewhere, make friends, get accepted for the person you are, most French do not understand golf anyway, be yourself… you are just like the rest of us….!!!!
And here is more reality…when Europeans come to America, they find it just as foreign as Bubba did in France. Europeans just handle it way better because they don’t see their ways as the only ways. And they win the Majors and the Ryder Cup, too.
In America, it is the gimmicky windmills, dyed water hazards, Paris Hilton. Jersey Shore. Rehab. Plastic Eiffel Towers, fake Pyramids, Hollywood. That is what many use to improve their worldly “cultural awareness”.
Many are “don’t you know who I think I am”…but they pile on someone like Bubba who really forces them to take a good, hard look in the mirror, which makes it all so painfully obvious…
J’ai seulement le temps je me soucie de Bubba est quand il est sur la TV de frapper un coup de départ.
Actually the more I think about this s***head the more angry I get. So I’m not going to think about him anymore. Tom? now that’s the name for a Watson Sherlock.
He can always give up golf and get a real job.
What job would you suggest he apply for?
I attended professional golf tournaments in Europe and enjoyed not being separated from the players by security. I even sat in clubhouse bars with players, was invited by a caddie to join his pro and the pro’s wife at a table and on one occasion was joined by an American player with lots of European experience (he drank from my beer mug). The European tournaments are looser and a whole lot of fun. The American players should spend more time in Europe. My favorite tournament was in Switzerland. Beautiful, the whole town rolls out the red carpet and the party never stopped.
big baby, surprised he stuck around for 36 holes instead of wd-ing with a phantom injury like he normally does when he’s playing like poop
@tiger186 I do like France for a few things … the chicks act and walk like slu_s … guys aint macho … U can go to bars, clubs, but liquor and cigarettes at any age … prostitution is legal … human trafficking is a rampant hunting ground … a safe haven for internationally wanted fugitives … lastly and most seriously, go to Normandy and look at all the white gravestones and pay your respect to the americans that died fighting to free the french from Hitler’s Reich …
I think it is ok/excusable to be ignorant of another culture – but you should treat the learning experience with humility and respect. His comments were arrogant and embarrassing for me as an american. Ignorance of other cultures is a universal situation – Europeans should’nt be so smug about it, they have so many different languages and histories jammed into a relatively small place. My guess is that a typical frenchman is just as ignorant of the culture of (for example) Peru as is a typically resident of the US. Bubba has shown his true redneck (and no, that’s not a good thing) colors – at least Boo Weekly is a nice guy and has little humility.
We had a Tight Lies tour event here that Bubba played in when he was struggling to get on tour. He was involved in a sudden death playoff, hit two OB trying to over power a par 5, yelled “FUCK THIS DOG TRACK” and asked on offical if he walked off if he’d still get second place money. When informed that, yes, he would get the prize money he stormed off with out saying another word to anyone. Glad he’s showing his ass for all the world to see.
Run Bubba run…(home) Life is like a box of chocolates, but don’t buy any Godiva chocolates Bubba cause they were founded in Belgium and they speak French there, lol! Just a kid who doesn’t get it…buy a clue with the 200g’s Bubba. Lots of American blood was spilled in that country way before you were born a spoiled brat. Go sightsee Normandy real quick on your way home.
Wow, who knew all this stuff about Bubba Watson, the player who has sobbing breakdowns on the 18th green after he wins?! Was wondering why his game doesn’t appear to hold up in the bigger PGA events and majors.
France, another country that forgot the US saved their behinds during WW#2. Send back your foreign aid. Bubba is kind of a dufus, but I think we will see a change in his attitude from here on out.
@john: France hasn’t forgotten what we’ve done for them. A few years ago I struck up a friendship with a member at the club I worked who was a serviceman involved in the battle at Normandy. He went back for every big anniversary (he’s getting too old to travel now) and said that he has never paid for a meal over there. The shop and restaurant owners have not forgotten at all and treat our veterans like A-list celebrities. He often got emotional talking about how they haven’t forgotten, but go ahead and think what you’d like.
@kr1,great post, thanks !. On the other hand, what all the Americans that bash France constantly have forgotten (or actually never learned most likely)is that almost 100 yrs ago, in WW1, France paid a butcher’s bill that is almost incomprehensible today. 1.4 million dead, 300k civilians dead, whole provinces devasted beyond belief. 4.2 million wounded military. (Compare that to Vietnam, with 60k US dead an 150k wounded that had the US in chaos with antiwar sentiment, and whose echos we hear almost every day.) Americans (and I am one btw) call them quitters or surrender prone, but they didn’t do that for 4 long years, so for that alone, my hat is off to them.
Conor, where the heck are you?
You gonna “wei-in” on the Bubba European debacle?
Funny, I never heard any french call an american tourist “ugly”…where did you get that from?? Hope you did not make an easy generalization because of those anti-globalization nazis that are roaming our streets during g8 meetings?
Anyway…today was our Dear Prince’s weddding (of Monaco..) and as no one in France really cares about golf, this incident is doomed to pass completely unnoticed. Bubba only hurts himself acting like he does, and it’s too bad cause the guy has some game!!
Wouldn’t call him Bubba the Barbarian, but he surely is uncool, unfunny and uncouth.
Who cares? I mean honestly, why are so many people here so mad at him? What is there to be angry at, this is who Bubba is. Would you honestly expect anything different?
I’m no Bubba lover, but this article positively reeks of elitism. Ms. Wei, have you ever gone fishing and watched as a hooked fish flopped around when being released on dry ground? Bubba in Europe is a fish out of water, and he subsequently flopped around like a buffoon, just as any fsh out of water does. Uncouth is a fair description of his behavior, but it wasn’t evil or anything worth lambasting. Instead of being a condescending jerk, but thankful that your horizons are so much broader. It may be presumptuous on my part, but I’m guessing someone who goes from Seattle to Yale to Manhattan is going to have a much easier time displaying cultural sophistication than a guy who spent 18 years in a community of 1500 in rural Florida. This is a pathetically insensitive article. Get off your high horse. Perhaps the worst thing about this article is that there are plenty of legitimate gripes with Bubba Watson such as his treatment of the fans. To your credit, you did broach this topic by mentioning his failure to work with French youths. However, this was certainly not the focal point of your article. It is just flat out mean to shake your head, bury your face in your hands, and say, “WOW” all because a guy isn’t comfortable traveling and would rather be at home. Can you say pretentious?
