Some have likened the man — who appears to be pouncing on Richard S. Johnson after clinching the win at the Scandinavian Masters — to Tarzan. Others have called him the Geico Caveman. But he’s actually Anders Timell, a Swedish Radio DJ and 3.5 handicap, who was moonlighting as Johnson’s caddie for the week while his regular looper, Lance Ten Broeck, played in the British Senior Open instead.
Ten Broeck failed to qualify for weekend play at the British Senior, and my, that’s one expensive cut to miss with his boss winning his second European Tour event of his career and fourth professional tournament.
Meanwhile, Johnson drained a 30-footer on the 18th green to avoid a playoff against Argentina’s Rafa Echenique and to become only the second home winner of the Scandinavian Masters in its 12-year history.
“It’s one of the sweetest things I’ve ever done,” Johnson said. “Just to come up the 17th and 18th is magical. This is a huge tournament to win for a Swede and I’m speechless right now. It’s epic.”
Epic — like the celebration Timell staged with his raving lunatic act after Johnson secured the victory.
It’s unclear where Johnson, a native Swede, met Timell, other than perhaps during a late night clubbing in Stockholm, but the two are friends and obviously meshed well together on the course. (Now that’s one victory celebration I’d like to attend.)
I’m intrigued with this Timell guy. He has a Twitter account, but naturally, it’s in Swedish. Care to translate, anyone? Oh, there’s also this YouTube video — a big hat tip to Golfweek‘s Sean Martin for the priceless find.
Maybe he should consider looking into a full-time gig as a bag man?

From a fellow herring-head, here are a few snippets from Anders’ twitter account:
Sun morning: Playing with two major winners today. Huge.
Sun afternoon: Man that was fun. Good Richard. Love you.
Two hours later: Unreal feeling to sit on Sturehof (local bar) with Richard and friends. So much fun.
2 AM Monday: Thanks for all the congratulations. If possible you’ve made me even more happy. Now home through the Stockholm night in a light rain.
2 PM Monday: Feels empty today, but what a week I’ve had.

Anders Timell is the younger brother of Martin Timell, Sweden’s version of Bob Vila (spell?). His daytime job is as chef of Teatergrillen (kind of like Sardie’s) and he does a short gig on a radio morning show and has an intermittent column on golf.se, the official Swedish golf site. An avid golfer he is a member of Bro Hof and thus knows the slopes of the greens in reasonable good detail. He has played with Richard Stanely Johnson and Per-Ulrik Johansson (who did the color commentary on Swedish television) while spending time with them in Florida.

So he’s no longer looping for Happy Gilmore?

I caddied for Richard at the club he plays (played) at regularly just as he was making it on the PGA Tour, super nice guy. Congrats Richard you deserve it after all your hard work!

Old hippies are uninhibited and they are demonstrative in showing their affection. Not a bad man to have on the bag next week, or the week after.
