Add Phil Mickelson to the camp that believes Tiger Woods will return to his winning ways. In fact, Mickelson, who finished tied for 33rd at the Singapore Open, said it’s “inevitable” Tiger will regain his form, according to the AFP on Sunday:
“I’ve played with him a couple of times throughout the year, watched him hit it and you can tell that his swing speed has come back,” Mickelson said in Singapore.
“So I don’t know when it will all click and he’ll be back to his normal self but I feel like it’s inevitable that he will get back there because he seems to keep getting better and better.”
I hope Phil wasn’t too genuine and was just saying what he was supposed to say — unless he really does enjoy playing the eternal bridesmaid — because Tiger’s return to pre-scandal form means Lefty will once again play second fiddle to him.
For some reason, Mickelson’s touting Tiger’s comeback reminded me of Jason Sobel’s quip in the final round of the Australian Open:
And that, my friends, is what you call an awesome tweet.

I’m not a fan of figjam, but perhaps Sobel should be reminded of the ’09 tour championship, the ’09 HSBC @ Shanghai, and ’10 Cog Hill.
A lefty stepping up to beat Tiger actually have happened more often than not in the last couple of years. Since 2007, Phil is 6-1-1 against Tiger to even their head-to-head record at 11-11-4 in 26 meetings (from palmbeachpost.com)
I remember reading somewhere when Phil was giving an interview on how Butch gave him advice on how to deal with every psychological tricks that Tiger would use on his opponents. After learning that, Phil claims, his struggles in these head to heads have started disappearing.
Bridesmaid, not even good enough to be a bridesmaid at the moment. Maybe get an invite to the evening reception though.
Tiger and Phil have played head to head 26 times? you mean who posted the best score when playing together? because I would imagine if you looked at who posted the best score in all tournaments they have played together regardless of playing in the same group its huge to Tiger. If Tiger never wins again he’s the 2nd best player ever. By the way I thought Phil was now a vegetarian, even John Daly has lost weight.
Not sure what Sobel is smoking and how that tweet is ‘awesome.’ Weir beat Tiger in mano a mano fashion at the P Cup in Montreal. Not to mention Nick O’Hern had beaten Tiger a few times at match plays.
In recent years, Phil has been very complimentary of Tiger — so I think he is being sincere. Unlike Rory and Westy — Phil is willing to give Tiger credit for what he has contributed to the sport and Phil’s personal wealth.
Killer caption.
@CM – don’t forget the 07 Deutche Bank, when they did go head to head in the final round, final group, along with that 2009 in Shanghai. Btw, since 2004, Phil has 3 Masters, TW 1.
I think that having Tiger in the field at full strength motivates Phil. And Phil has gotten the better of Tiger over the past several years, as other commenters have noted.
Super post! I`ll send it to all my friends!
