The above photo is Jeff Overton’s mug shot at the Monroe County Jail in Bloomington, Indiana, after the PGA Tour player was arrested for resisting law enforcement, public intoxication and disorderly conduct on Saturday morning. That’s right – ’10 Ryder Cup team member, who played his college golf at Indiana, was thrown into the drunk tank and faces three misdemeanor charges, according to the Bloomington Herald-Times.
(Oh noes! I’m smelling potential suspension from the Tour! I mean, isn’t that conduct unbecoming of a professional? Well, not that it really matters, I guess, since we’ll never know one way or the other because they don’t disclose disciplinary actions.)
Overton’s reasons for attending the Indiana-Kentucky basketball game were admirable. He showed up at Assembly Hall to present a $50,000 check to the university to support the Play Golf America University program.
Unfortunately, the 28-year-old golfer forgot he wasn’t a college student anymore, causing police to arrest him for acting like a drunk fratboy. More details of the events from Saturday night, via the Evansville Courier & Press:
According to a police report, officers said Overton was yelling at people from a limousine that blocked traffic in front of Kilroy’s Sports Bar on Walnut Street.
The limousine driver told police they were waiting on others, and the driver was instructed to not block traffic.
Later, the limo carrying Overton pulled up next to Bloomington police, and officers report Overton was yelling at people on the street again. Police pulled the limousine over, according to the Herald-Times.
The newspaper reported that Overton repeatedly refused to give his ID to police and refused to step out of the limo. A police report described Overton’s behavior as “belligerent,” and he reportedly told officers “he wasn’t going to do anything.” Police say he smelled of alcohol, his eyes were glassy and his speech was slurred.
Overton was removed from the limo and eventually handcuffed on the ground, a policeman said.
As police were arresting Overton on the public intoxication and disorderly conduct charges, Overton fought and pulled away from police. Overton continued to yell at other people, attempted to “wrench” away from police, and refused to give a form of ID to police, an officer told the newspaper.
Well, if I’m being perfectly honest, I’m not floored that this happened. This isn’t Overton’s first arrest for alcohol-related incidents, but to be fair, the others happened while he was a college student.
Jeff is a good guy and means well, but you just need to watch him play a hole — or maybe even a shot — to realize he acts like a child who throws (multiple) temper tantrums during his rounds. Which is a shame because he’s such a talented player that’s getting in his own way… all sorts of people in his life have tried to talk to him about his attitude problem, but to no avail.
Overton plans to contest the charges. I’m betting $1,000 they’re dismissed or he just receives a $500-ish fine. (No, I’m not suggesting he deserves hard prison time.) Sounds like he acted like an idiot and should pay up. (That would suck if he had to go to alcohol-abuse — or whatever it’s called — classes.)
“I feel my rights were violated,” he told the Herald-Times. “I’m sitting in my own limo and got pulled out. Other than that, I’m going to let my lawyer handle it.”

Great source-building. (Sarcasm.) You could have at least thrown him an “alleged” if you were going to mock his mugshot and call him childish. A DUI charge is one thing, but this snarky of a post for those charges is head-scratching. How do you expect to get a fair interview from him next time he wins an event? Or, God forbid, you ask him for a comment yourself?
The only head-scratcher is the comment.
NFW any of this sticks. Small town cops over-reacting to a non-event.
If you want a video illustration go watch Hollywood Knights, it’s all available on youtube.
Overton has a problem controlling his emotions on the course. Throwing things, non-stop cussing, pouting. Nothing new. The guy is a talent, but I simply don’t enjoy watching gentlemen (and I use that term lightly) like him play.
I hope he straighten out his act both on and off the course.
Bad boy bad boy,
whata gonna doooo?
So he was drunk and made sure he had a driver. Big deal. He may be a tool, but I don’t see any laws broken.?
He may have to practice some “Tebowing” to convince the commish of his repentance.
I agree with TXQ about Brad G’s comment. Sounds like Overton was being a douche, and if he truly resisted the officers, he deserved what he got. Good player, but he did a stupid thing.
Whats the world coming to when you can’t get hammered and yell at people from out of your limo window?
Can’t say I’m a fan of the “drunk fratboy” comment. As someone who was in a fraternity in college, anytime that crass generalization is made, I take exception and don’t put much stock in what’s written around it. Your posts are normally very good, but this one makes you come off like an arrogant Ivy-Leaguer (or is that an unfair generalization?).
@Tim G, I’m sorry if you weren’t a fan of the “drunk frat boy” comment, but I think you’re taking some of my writing too literal. the “generalization” is a stereotype that i was using as a figure of speech.
most of my friends were in fraternities, so i posed this whole non-controversy controversy as a a hypothetical to a 6 or 7 of them, and none were offended. I was in a sorority and if someone used the expression “drunk sorority girl,” I wouldn’t bat an eye.. But in the future, I’ll be mindful of your comments and perhaps replace “drunk frat boy” with “drunk college student” etc.
As for “arrogant Ivy-Leaguer,” sorry if you think I came across as one, but fair enough. I’d actually use that “generalization” in a story to describe someone who I thought was acting like one. Doesn’t bother me. It’s actually amusing because there’s a hint of truth to that stereotype but any person with any semblance of a brain, knows that it doesn’t apply to the entire student body at all 8 ivy institutions.
Going forward, I’ll try to refrain from acting like an arrogant Ivy Leaguer.
Spot on Tim G. I have the feeling a GDI wrote this article.
@belly putter, sorry, a GDI didn’t write the article. A.Kappa Alpha Theta sister did.
He was in a limo and not driving. Sure, he was a little hammered and maybe shouted at somebody doing something stupid on the side of the street. I think that’s a lame reason for getting thrown in the klink for public intoxication. He was INSIDE the friggin limo, people. Come on. He got a bum rap. Sounds like the campus police need to chill out a little bit. Same thing happened to me when I visited my alma mater a few years after graduation. These rent a cops are out of control and always looking to make an example out of people.
“Drunk fratboy” is wrong only in that Overton acted like a drunk high-school sophomore.
The moment he stuck his head out of the limo window he was in public. Swearing, IS against the law although only in extreme circumstances is it enforced. If you cooperate with the police and are polite they usually give you the benefit. As soon as you think you know more than them (especially concerning the law) the will immediately show you you don’t.
I have no issues with your collumn Steph, you have the cahonjes to at least address his attitude both on, and now off, the course. Maybe those alcohol classes would do him good.
I don’t think you said it so I will…
The boy needs to grow up.
Keep rockin’ Ms. Wei!
Is this supposed to be a news story or a set of personal shots at Overton? Strange way this story was compiled. I dont believe Overton was the only person out of line. Must be some history here.
News story. That was easy. Next question?
personal shots. enough said TXQ
@Steph, ur right, Jeff has an attitude and REP on tour. I can promise that a number of dudes on tour won’t be surprised. From the outside looking in he seems like he emulates all the negatives, ala Pat Perez, who I love
Yeesh. Of course, “I have the feeling a GDI wrote this article” is not a personal shot.
Maybe he will use the “I am famous” defense.
“I am famous for making the Ryder Cup team without ever winning on Tour.”
“I am famous for a hole-out-induced yell, which has been replayed so often, people have almost forgotton I still have not won on Tour.”
Maybe I am thinking of the “I am infamous” defense.
“Overton plans to contest the charges. I’m betting $1,000 they’re dismissed or he just receives a $500-ish fine.”
—————-
So what exactly should be the punishment for a public intoxication. Overton isn’t going to pay a fine as special treatment. This is what anyone would get for such a small offense
….and yeah, Tim G. has the best comment. He sums my thoughts up exactly.
yes, pay a lawyer $10,000 to dismiss a $500 fine. press release, apology, plead no contest, pay the fine, story goes away.
Boom Baby!
TXQ:
Sorry, that’s not how a news story is written. The news itself is belittling enough – and deservedly so. Adding childish remarks in a “news story” isn’t journalism.
Okay, as long as you’re sorry.
Btw, the heading read “gossip.”
That’s certainly different than news. Just a strange combo of the two.
I wish people criticizing the style of Ms. Wei’s writing would wind their necks in and shut the hell up.
Who do you think you all are? Don’t like it, then shove off and read something else.
Do you think the rest of the world gives a rat’s ass about your opinion of SW’s “journalism” skills? Answer; NO we don’t!
Not only that, this is a BLOG so the normal standards of journalism don’t strictly apply as the articles are often, quite clearly, opinion pieces.
Simon, you would be correct except she is a credentialed member of the media. So ‘journalism’ is very much a factor. Gossip mags arent given media passes and press box seats. If she submitted credentials to Augusta National as a ‘gossip blog,’ im guessing the outcome may be different. I love the site, was just taken aback by the way this particular post was written compared to others.
No huge deal by any means, but to say a reader cant question something or ask if there is something more to it is a bit short-sighted. Using your theory, quit reading my comments and bug off.
Tim. G, Jordan, my points exactly. I respect Stephanie’s site, but she is a journalist. (Journalists can run “blogs” and still be held to high standards.) It’s the potshots for accusations—weak ones for actions that didn’t harm anyone else—that bother me. She’s a tour insider, but likely burned a bridge with Overton here. How can she expect him to give her an interview any time in the near future? She didn’t just report the facts, she made a mockery of the guy. It very much comes across as if she has beef with Overton and is using this post as a measure of revenge.
I should note that my earlier comment, and those in response to it, were deleted. As there is no flagging tool on this site, I find it very unethical that they were all removed without any explanation. That’s a thin-skinned approach and poor transparency.
Were these in fact rent a cops as you call them? I’ve never been one, but authority is authority if they are getting paid. If they carry a firearm, they are a cop. Just like the father of four who was gunned down in NYC this week by some cretin.
He was breaking about five laws actually. Maybe because he is who he is, he can do what he wants. I mean I guess if five guys wanted to park in front of any place and yell out of there repspective limos, why not? Somehow I feel it was not Merry Christmas he was yelling. From my youth, guys usually get like this when they don’t get laid by the “lucky woman” they have chosen for the evening.
The cops likely did the right thing to prevent the situation from escalating.
to better understand this (being european):
swearing is against the law? being publicly intoxicated is against the law too and in combination with yelling deserves being handcuffed to the ground?
obviously a wonderful place to live at, this us and a…
You Stephanie are a poor writer, the fact that you defend yourself to comments proves it.
Hmm is anyone else experiencing problems with
the pictures on this blog loading? I’m trying to determine if its a problem on my end or if it’s the blog.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
