NFL love: Manning and Bellichick tee it up at Pebble Beach

Manning and Bellichick: NFL bond runs deep
Peyton Manning did make the trip to play in the AT&T National Pebble Beach Pro-Am, after all. He was a last-minute addition to the field after the Seattle Seahawks throttled the esteemed quarterback and his Denver Broncos just three days ago in the 48th edition of the Super Bowl.

What better place to drown your sorrows than hitting the links at Pebble Beach?

Manning played in a practice round on Wednesday with New England Patriots’ head coach Bill Bellichick, according to the San Francisco Chronicle’s Ron Kroichick:

“But it was striking him to see him tee off with Manning, given their own history on the football field.

The Patriots and Manning-led Indianapolis Colts engaged in quite a few tussles over the years. This past season, New England staged a giant comeback to topple Manning and Denver on November 24 — and then the Broncos exacted revenge in the AFC Championship Game on January 19.

The likely connection here: Pebble Beach CEO Bill Perocchi is a Boston-area native and avid Patriots fan. He probably also had something to do with adding Manning to the AT&T field at the last minute.”

It sounds like it could have been awkward, but Manning and Bellichick didn’t *have* to play together — though they might have felt pressured to comply if it had been the idea of one of the big wigs. Still, they could have politely declined and whomever set it up probably asked them if they felt comfortable teeing it up together.

I’m pretty sure the football talk was kept to a minimum — you know, no one in the group asked Manning why or how he was shut down so badly by the LOB on Sunday. It was likely a more comfortable pairing than had Manning (or Bellichick) played with some fan boy CEO.

For the tournament rounds, Manning is teamed with pro Scott Langley. They will play alongside Greg Owen and former San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman, Harris Barton. Hey, so Barton and Manning will have something in common — both probably aren’t massive fans of the Seattle Seahawks at the moment!

Meanwhile, Bellichick is paired with James Driscoll. Their foursome will be complete with New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and his partner Ricky Barnes.

No word yet if they’ll discuss the Seahawks’ dominant performance. (As a Seattle native, big shameless shoutout to the Super Bowl champs! GO HAWKS!)
