Rory McIlroy kept the press corps guessing overnight, but after arriving on-site only twenty minutes before his scheduled tee time, the 22-year-old announced his intention to play in today’s second round of the USPGA Championship by immediately heading to the range for a brief warm-up.

The Northerner injured his right wrist while undertaking a risky recovery shot in the early stages of yesterday’s first round.

After his ball came to rest little more than two inches behind a tree root, McIlroy attempted to make a full swing and abruptly truncate his follow-through. Though the recovery was ultimately successful, his wrist was jarred awkwardly through impact.

He received treatment over the course of the next several holes and was forced to play the back nine with his right arm heavily bandaged. The Northerner’s manager, Andrew “Chubby” Chandler, later indicated that McIlroy’s participation in the second would be entirely contingent on his level of discomfort prior to the commencement of the today’s round.

McIlroy, with his right forearm heavily bandaged, has just teed off in the company of the year’s other major champions, compatriot Darren Clarke and South African Charl Schwartzel.
