Matt Every finally makes news for his golf game, rolling in birdies on his last three holes to shoot six-under 64, 10-under total, to lead the Sony Open by two shots at the halfway mark (unless Doug Labelle, who has five holes to play, makes a few birdies coming in).
It’s impossible not to look back to the summer of 2010 during his rookie season at the John Deere Classic when he was arrested (along with two caddies) for possession of a controlled substance (marijuana), a misdemeanor charge — which was eventually dropped (he never even had to appear in court). He was later suspended by the PGA Tour for three months for “conduct unbecoming a professional.”
Every’s fine golf has been overshadowed by his interview with Golf Channel’s Kelly Tilghman. I missed the live version, but instantly received a gazillion texts, tweets and emails about it, all of which included adjectives, like “awkward” and “train wreck.” Naturally, I ran outside to see if he was still around to ask him for his reaction.
Oh, but first, here’s the video in case you missed it (for the record, I found the Lost segue way more uncomfortable):
Asked by Tilghman to take us back to the time he was arrested and suspended, Every said:
“It was alright. I just got three months off. It’s just golf. I don’t think I was doing anything wrong. It happened. I’m the same person, I have the same friends and I don’t think it’s that big of deal. There’s a lot worse stuff that goes on out here than what I got in trouble for and that’s all I’m going to say about it.”
And what did you learn?
“I feel like I’m the same person. I’m maybe a little more responsible, but I’m not a huge party animal — I’m married, I got a kid on the way. I just like to live, and whatever happened, happened.”
When I found him and asked him for his account, he wanted to provide some background: “Let me say this — last year during the Disney, I was playing decent in the first round, and I guess on-air Kelly Tilghman said I was back from my suspension for possession of marijuana — I was suspended for conduct unbecoming, not possession of marijuana. So that pissed me off a little.”
I asked if he would have answered differently had he been prepared for the question.
“No, I answered pretty honestly,” said Every. “I’m probably getting crucified for not being politically correct, but whatever. It’s so dumb.”
What was also lost in all of this? No one ever explained the charges were dropped or mentioned Every denied smoking marijuana or being in possession of it. For what it’s worth, I believe him because it only takes about a minute to realize he’s incredibly honest — almost to a fault. He answered every question in his press conference truthfully and asked if he deserved to be suspended, he said, “Probably.”
His comments also back up his original story.
“I was upset at myself,” said Every during his presser. “There’s some stuff I can’t talk about, but I was pissed at the way it was handled. I don’t know. I don’t do drugs. It was a crappy deal, man. Wrong place, wrong time, perfect storm, and you know, I got three months out of it. It’s over with. I’m not mad at the Tour. They did what they had to do. I totally understand it. But it’s over with.”
Then, he presented the best quote of the year — or possibly ever.
“I still hang out with the same people,” he said. “I have great friends, man. If one of my friends likes to smoke marijuana every now and then, I’m not going to say, well, you can’t be my friend anymore. Honestly, man, I know more people who smoke marijuana than who don’t smoke marijuana.
“I know that’s probably not the politically correct thing to say, but it’s the truth. It’s not a big deal to me. Like I don’t frown upon people doing that stuff. I don’t do it, but I don’t frown upon it.”
You know what adjectives I’d use to describe Every (and his interviews)? Refreshing and legendary.

my adjectives? ignorant and ungrateful. listen, I don’t hold it against these guys that they’ve got all all the talent in the world, but his comments made it seem like he feels entitled and above the law. how about him saying, well I understand I play for a lot of money now and I represent the PGA tour and my sponsors out here, so I learned I should be a little more careful about who I hang around with, especially when there’s illegal activity going on. and btw, why did he deny smoking the marijuana then later say he “probably” deserved to be suspended? I know these guys aren’t all perfect and neither am I, but that interview made him one of my least favorite players.
I’m guessing hes not on DLIII’s watch list for a Ryder Cup Capt’s pick. Dude needs to grow up.
A breath of fresh air.
This guy is a king! He’s honest, having fun and living life to the fullest – he’s a freaking professional golfer. So he smoked a little weed, whoop-di-doo. so what. People get buzzed on alcohol, pharmaceuticals and all that’s acceptable? I like him. Good luck, Matt!
like he said, there are a lot worse things going on out there than what he got in trouble for. don’t forget people, these guys are golfers, not nasa scientists.
[...] Wei not only has a video of the Tilghman interview on her blog, but she also approached Every herself. If Stephanie is on the property, I would expect nothing less. Here’s a brief excerpt… I asked if he (Every) would have answered differently had he been prepared for the question. [...]
Is anybody curious why Tilghman would ask such stupid questions? I hope she has more common sense than to bring up the past…. And that her bosses at GC are calling these shots. Train wreck of an interview and has herself to blame!
Wake up Kelly!!!!
You people need to lighten up. About time someone wasnt brown nosing the powers that be. He is HUMAN. get over it. Kelly Should hand her head in shame. She should of spoke about a 2nd year tour player leading a tournament with great players playing. I hope EVERY goes on to win and sticks it up Golf Channel and Kellys @ss!
The suspension for conduct, was bc of the marijuana arrest, and it cost him his card, which is why he was on the nationwide tour last year. It’s pertinent to his golf journey. She had to ask. But the way she asked it stunk, and he didn’t answer very well, so it turned into a train-wreck. His answers were a lot better in his presser.
I think we all tend to forget just how hard these interviews are for both the interviewer (and it’s their job so they should be better), and the players, and cut all of them some slack.
Using the word “legendary” just always gets me upset. When you use it in case of Andreas Gonzales who still is no closer to a legend than for example David Howell is, it just makes me wonder about your prefessionalism. I know you are very educated so I expect more from you than anything as stupid as using “legendary” in here or describing a below average tour visitor.
I don’t understand the criticism of Kelly, the reason she asked the questions is because the suspension is all that Every is known for right now. If he was a better player she might’ve been able to ask him about last week in Kapalua. Right now he is a run of the mill tour player with an interesting suspension on his record. It would have been awful if she didn’t mention it. It’s obviously a different situation, but the sane reason Compton gets asked about his heart every interview. If you are known for something unique, you will always have to answer questions about it.
I liked that he didn’t give PC answers to Kelly, but he did a very poor job of giving his side of the story. He made it seem like he smoked weed- got benched for 3 months-now still smokes weed. He was much more informative in his quick interview with Stephanie. He shouldn’t have let his bitterness over Kelly’s comments at Disney cloud his judgment in the chair with her.
Who cares if people smoke pot? Its better than booze its just unfortunately “illegal”. Even though so many people smoke.
I’m sure Bridgestone was thrilled to see their logo all over this dufus as he was fighting for his right to party. No matter what everyone here thinks, I guarantee that if, 10 years from now, Every looks back at his answers, he will cringe. Those bashing Kelly on this ?? Guy is a nobody who just last year got suspended, and now he is on the way back – you can’t play up a redemption story without mentioning the reason for the low point. She did a fine job.
Is it me or does Kelly look hotter this year?
Cappy-jack, I was totally thinking the same thing! In HD, Kelly was looking really hot…or maybe my standards are lower because we’re talking about golf commentators. Either way, not bad.
And I don’t understand why Kelly is being criticized AT ALL. I thought she did a great job asking Every about the arrest. Finally something that makes watching golf telecasts more interesting! Every did horribly answering the question, and came across as pompous and arrogant. He was even criticized by Faldo afterwards (“that young man needs a PR guy…”), which I loved, because I don’t find Every to be very likeable AT ALL.
As long as Every performs better and wins a couple of times, people will stop asking about the arrest. Just ask Dustin Johnson, I barely hear his DUI arrest (which is IMO much worse because others could have been injured) mentioned anymore.
So, people are pissed that Matt didn’t offer up cookie cutter/p.c. answers like so many bozos on tour do. The bigger story here is that no one’s holding Tilghman accountable for her lack of follow-up during the interview. When Every alluded to the behavior of others being far worse than his, any self-respecting journalist would’ve pursued that. Stop being a p.r. flack for the tour, Kelly, and do your job.
Kelly does look hotter. Maybe more makeup.
It is very sad when the question asked had very little to do with the awesome round of golf ! Kelly should be reprimanded , once again…just like she was with the Tiger incident !
@THQ.. Kelly does look hot. Too bad she’s not very good. C’mon ‘seriously’ who cares. I’m glad every answered honestly. He’s not a dealer.. he’s not a stoner.
Sometime Golf is so full of itself. Have you guys ever hung out at a Muni on Thursday or Friday. I’m like seriously routing for this guy now. Finally someone with some edge!!
The problem, as I just said in the other thread, isn’t that she asked about it. It’s that she hung it out there as him hitting a low point, his life falling off track, oh poor guy must’ve been miserable and he must be so thankful to be back. It’s not up to her or anyone else to decide that, and to do it to his face: crazy. He clearly doesn’t feel that way so neither should we, and especially neither should Kelly.
I realize that this guy isn’t the most articulate or smartest dude on the planet…but no one – including the stiff shirts on the TOUR – should give a crap whether he hangs out with people who smoke a little weed. It wasn’t too long ago that probably 75% of all caddies were druggies and alcoholics. And he’s right. We ALL probably know more people that smoke dope than people that don’t.
[...] charges were dropped, but apparently the story hasn’t been. And Every was actually suspended by the PGA for [...]
I happened to have the opportunity to chat with Every’s caddie after the incident (no longer his caddie) and he affirmed that Every did nothing wrong. He did no smoke the stuff, he did purchase the stuff, he was just in the room. And, yes, asking someone about a past tiny part of one’s golfing reality is petty. I found it amusing and refreshing for him to say he did not learn anything from the experience to apply to today. What should he have learned? Those were not bad people he was with, just a bit stupid.

ToddH, will you please go DIE
Matt Every is EXACTLY what the tour needs. Someone who is different. Even if he was smoking pot its not the end of the world. It’s a plant put here by God. Just because the US government doesn’t like it doesn’t make it bad or wrong. Pot takes the edge off and makes golf absolutely amazing. And the fact that Every was straight up about it is even better. He is right. It’s not that big a deal.
Seeing Kelly Tilghman interview someone is just painful. She is right up there in my book with Ann Curry of the Today Show. PAINFUL.
Kelly could use a nice spank. And I’m happy to take care of it. Case closed.
