Much to the surprise of no one, Davis Love III will be tapped to captain the 2012 United States Ryder Cup team, according to GolfChannel.com. The PGA of America’s Board of Directors met last month to officially approve the selection.
When contacted, Love referred all questions to the PGA of America.
“It’s our hope to announce the 2012 Ryder Cup captain in the first quarter sometime next year,” said Julius Mason, the PGA’s senior director of communications and media relations.
At the McGladrey Classic, Love was asked his feelings on captaining the 2012 Ryder Cup and he seemed stuck on the idea of playing. But then he came to terms with reality and added that he didn’t want to pass up the chance of becoming captain, either.
Too soon to ask Love what his plans are for rainsuits?
Meanwhile, José María Olazábal will likely be named the next European Ryder Cup captain at a press conference on January 18 in Abu Dhabi, according to The Guardian.
Olazábal might well have led the side at Celtic Manor in October, but hesitated over throwing his hat into the ring and the Tour’s tournament committee instead turned to Colin Montgomerie.
Immediately after regaining the trophy in Wales Montgomerie confirmed that he had no intention standing for re-election and gave his support to Olazábal taking over from him for the 2012 match at Medinah in Chicago.
The only problem for the Spaniard, who with Seve Ballesteros formed the most successful partnership in cup history, has been his health. He has been battling rheumatic pains for well over a decade and played only one tournament in the first nine months of this year.
No surprises with these reports — Love and Ollie were both frontrunners for the job. They’re both well-liked and well-spoken, which means the news cycle leading up to the event may be a tad slower.

I’ve always liked Ollie. At his best, he was one helluva player. Ditto for Davis. Of course Davis and Morgan Pressel have a mutual admiration society and therefore that just enhances my respect for Love. Not exactly deep analysis, but heck, it’s Friday night.
I was always a pretty big fan of Davis’. Even though the captain is probably overrated in terms of the outcome, I don’t see a good result of having Davis having the job. It seems to me that a certain amount of toughness is needed, and unfortunately, I think that is what Davis came up short in. Hope I’m wrong.

Yes it should be an interesting contest with these two as captain. They are both very passionate about golf and their respective teams.
Bring it on!
